As Apple's WorldWide Developer Conference gets underway today, Apple's iPhone, and the new OS 3.0 software which is coming soon, is taking center stage. Let's see what's coming our way this summer.
MMS feature-rich texting is on the way, but it won't be available to U.S. customers who're at the mercy of AT&T, until "later this summer." Also, as expected, OS 3.0 also finally brings cut-and-paste functionaly to the phone.
The new 3rd generation iPhone anounced today, while maintaining the same form factor, will be touting various hardware improvements:
- Auto-focusing camera, capable of taking 30 frames-per-second video
- Basic video editing can be done on the fly, then videos can be shared through MMS, YouTube, etc.
- Graphics hardware as been improved and now supports the OpenGL|ES standard
- Phone now supports voice commands for phone functionality, basic iPod functions
- New built-in digital compass
- About a 30% battery life increase
- $199 for 16GB version, $299 for 32GB version
- Available June 19th.
Additionally, TomTom is the first out of the gate with a genuine GPS solution for the phone.
TomTom appears to be first to take advantage of the new features of OS 3.0 and at WWDC, they announced their official turn-by-turn GPS offering for the iPhone.
Along with the software comes an attachment for the phone, which will include a speaker and an enhanced microphone (for voice commands) as well as mounting suction cup for attaching the phone to your car.
Pricing and availablity from the TomTom GPS software/hardware should be coming within the next few days/weeks.
