There’s a new Hunter S. Thompson biopic coming out called Gonzo, named for the style of journalism he forged in the middle part of last century. It was part journalism and part druggy, booze-soaked storytelling. Interested? Read on, you reader of true grit.
I hated the kids in high school who had an unnatural predilection toward Hunter S. Thompson. They liked him, it seemed, because he did a whole lot of drugs and the teachers did a whole lot of no drugs. That was the depth of their critical analysis. I found this unsatisfactory. Besides, they clothespinned Black Flag patches on their Old Navy military coat to be the edgiest kid at the Orange Julius.
At the time, I felt I had to take an equally radical stance against Hunter Thompson to balance their dogmatic allegiance. I’ve grown up a lot since then (about 4 inches) and now have come to believe Thompson’s works have at least a little merit even if (because?) they are drug-fueled. Also: the kid Reggie (described above) is assistant manager at Orange Julius. We’ve both come pretty far, I guess.
