The writer of the novel the movie High Fidelity was based on, as well as the director of the movie, might be serendipitously teaming up again for a new film. This one would be based on Beth Raymer's memoir titled "Lay the Favorite, Take the Dog", which hasn't yet been published.
The script is going to be written by D.V. DeVincentis, who also wrote the script for High Fidelity, based on Nick Hornby's book, and directed by Stephen Frears, who directed. The Hollywood Reporter tells us this about the project:
Raymer's memoir is set amid a group of fiftyish math geeks who figure out how to work the sportsbook system in Las Vegas for their own profit. It centers on a woman in her early thirties who has made a series of bad choices but achieves a redemption of sorts when she meets and then becomes involved with the gamblers.
"It's a less violent, less sketchy version of the mob," DeVincentis said of the colorful gamblers, who are based on real people. "This is the version of 50-year-old math geeks from Queens in basketball shorts who have pet guinea pigs."
This definitely sounds like a different can of worms than High Fidelity, and it doesn't have the awesome source material that Nick Hornby's novel provided, but there's potential here for a very funny movie.
It's almost a shame that it's taken nine years for Frears and DeVincentis to reteam for a new movie, but now that they are we can hope that this becomes a more regular thing.
No word on who's going to get cast in this, but we can at least hope that John Cusack gets some kind of role, no matter how minor. This seems like something that would be right up his alley. And how about Todd Louiso and Jack Black? A reunion of these guys might not only make for an excellent movie, it might also remind us of why we ever thought we liked Jack Black to begin with.
