Frank Darabont Takes On Zombies

Director Frank Darabont has a pretty terrific track record of making great films. He's helmed  The Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, and The Green Mile, and now he’s in the process of turning the series from Image Comics, The Walking Dead, into a television series. Sitting in the executive producer’s chair will be Gale Anne Hurd, who has a solid history of working with directors like James Cameron on movies such as Terminator 2, The Abyss, and Aliens. Darabont and Hurd make a pretty exciting filmmaking duo.

AMC is behind the series, and its senior vice president of programming, Joel Stillerman, had this to say about the graphic novels:

This is not about zombies popping out of closets. This is a story about survival, and the dynamics of what happens when a group is forced to survive under these circumstances. The world (in 'Walking Dead') is portrayed in a smart, sophisticated way.

At this point there isn’t any studio attached to the project, though it’s likely Darabont and Hurd will be able to gather all the resources they need. Variety describes the story of The Walking Dead as, “set among a group of zombie survivors of an apocalypse who are led by a police officer, Rick Grimes, in search of a safe place to live.”

Looks like the zombie movie genre is going to continue to get a lot of attention in Hollywood in coming years. Will Walking Dead stand apart from the rest? Will zombies play on television as well as they do on the big screen?

Guess we’re going to find out soon.
