LeRoi Moore, the talented jazz fusion and funk saxophonist of the Dave Matthews Band, died Tuesday under strange circumstances. He was 46. (Details and a tribute after the jump)
Moore died of complications from injuries he suffered in an all-terrain vehicle accident over a month a go. Details are fuzzy. According to a statement on the band's website, Moore died the Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was admitted with complications that arose weeks after the June 30 wreck. The hospital could not release details and did not specify what led to his death.
As a tribute, DMB performed last night as planned at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Béla Fleck and the Flecktones saxophonist Jeff Coffin has been filling in for Moore since his accident.
The band posted the following statement on its Web site Tuesday night…
"We are deeply saddened that LeRoi Moore, saxophonist and founding member of Dave Matthews Band, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, August 19, 2008, at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles from sudden complications stemming from his June ATV accident on his farm near Charlottesville, Virginia. LeRoi had recently returned to his Los Angeles home to begin an intensive physical rehabilitation program."
