Deadliest Warrior

Blood on the Sand: Shaolin Monk vs. Maori Warrior

Tonight at 10pm, a Shaolin Monk squares off against a Maori Warrior in a battle to the death. This time around, I have a small confession to make: I'm not familiar enough with Chinese or Maori history to the point that I could give you a rundown of facts, figures, dates, and strategies that would make for a truly expert analysis. Most of what I know regarding these two warriors, I learned in the process of filming tonight's episode.

That alone made this episode a blast, and in the condensed time I had to work with our Shaolin and Maori experts, I was able to pick up the bare beginnings of their underlying philosophies. What sets this fight apart from any of the others we've seen this season is the emphasis on spirituality, and the role it plays within each warrior's martial skills.

Chances are, you're already familiar with one portrayal of Shaolin Kung Fu thanks to films, television shows, games, and other media for better or (more likely) worse. Much, much, worse. Tonight we're trying to get beyond the myth, the wire fu, and the damage done to Shaolin Kung Fu's reputation by a half century of being dragged through the gutters of popular culture. Chances are also pretty good that your familiarity with Maori martial culture begins and ends with the Haka, which has suffered it's own share of indignities recently. This is another course we aim to correct tonight.

So let's start down the down the right path by examining the attitudes towards combat that both warriors are bringing to tonight's fight.

Shaolin monks are pacifists -- their martial skills were honed for use as a last resort, to fend off those who would seek to prey on the fruits of peace. While the Shaolin monastery was founded in the 5th century CE, and there are records of Monks fighting to defend it shortly afterwards, the use of what we would think of today as "Martial Arts" was not documented until sometime in the 16th century.

A practiced Shaolin monk is highly skilled fighter, but as a warrior, his goal is to defy any killer instinct he may possess. His arts are about control, discipline, and extinguishing the ego: They are the external counterpart to the mental exercises he conducts as a monk. Combat is yet another struggle along the path to enlightenment, an obstacle to furthering his spiritual goals.

Our Maori warrior, on the other hand, fights for to enrich his spiritual well being. Maori culture began somewhere in several waves of migration between 800-1300 CE, when the Maori arrived from Eastern Polynesia. Their cultural origins include the concept of mana, a notion they share with other Polynesian cultures. Loosely put, mana is the living power, the vital essence of all things: people, objects, places, and even nations. A warrior who possesses great mana possesses power and authority, and the best way for him to gain additional mana is to triumph in battle.

A Maori warrior's weapons themselves were invested with the mana his ancestors had earned through their victories in combat. His weapons, imbued with the sacred power of his predecessors, took on an authority of their own. While I'm unaware of a monastic tradition amongst the Maori, I'm willing to claim that combat is a much more spiritual, and consequently meaningful, experience for our Maori warrior than it is for our Shaolin Monk.

While the Maori warrior's weapons may give their wielder a psychological or spiritual boost, there's little doubt that the Shaolin Monk is working with a higher grade of material. His weapons aren't necessarily forged form top-notch steel, but they are metal, and that in and of itself is a significant leap in quality over the wood, stone, tooth, and bone that the Maori warrior is wielding.

Perhaps that is the essence of tonight's fight. Can the tools of disciplined master overcome the spirit and intensity of a warrior who fights for not only himself, but also his entire line?

As always, we're looking forward to your comments, questions, and feedback. As this was a learning experience for me, I'm looking forward to talking more about it in The Aftermath.

Morituri te Salutant,
Max

Perhaps one of our friends from the southern hemisphere can clarify this point, but i was told recently by a friend in New Zealand that in the absence of being able to type the curve over the "a" that a double a is used, making the name "Maaori", not "Maori".

I hope they take into account the iron fist training of the shaolin monk. As a student shaolin martial artest I have come to see that the conditioning of the limbs and fist and feet are an essential to the shaolin monks training. The shaolin monk could easily overcom any man unarmed and i think that should be taken into perstective.

    Kia Ora,

I will be looking forward to this battle as judging by the other forums around, the Maori are completly misunderstood! People either think a. Maori dont exist, tell that to the 700,000 Maori here and around the world b. Maori are bruts and have no stealth, well I think you must have some skill to be able to defend your small race against the inmeasurable enemy. The english and dutch have been unable to annilate the much much smaller Maori (think of say an average american school taking on the entire american army for size comparasion) and for the Maori battalion in world war II, to be the most successful out of all the other battalions (google the battle of monte cassino) Rommel (Hitlers right hand man) said "if I had an army of Maori we could conquer the world" Also these invading countries had steel weapons and guns (the initial invasion of nz was before Maori had guns as it was these invading countries that brought the guns and steel to nz in the first place) and good ol wooden taiahas (spear type weapons) still did the trick! Lastly just for clarification Maori are neither Hawaiians or Pacific Islanders no matter how many times television tries pass them off as Maori.

Kia pai to ra (have a good day)

Shaolin monk is going to own. They have been training all there lives to perfect skill and wisdom, and they have faced far more worst warriors than the Maori . Don't get me wrong i do not underestimate the Maori. But the Maori never faced a skill opponent and Certainly never seen the Monks weapons far better than there own. Monks are going to win by 600/635 kills around there.

Max makes a good point, the Shaolin are pacifists, unwilling to deliver the deathblow, just to drive off those willing to defile sacred ground. The Maaori on the other hand are near the exact opposite. The kill and massacre for their religion. The brutalistic ways of the Maaori give them an edge that the Shaolin's will lack, however the Shaolin are ahead of the Maaori in terms of training and with better weaponry. Another thing I would point out is that the pacifistic training the Shaolin have might come into play in their favor, for example a Maaori would charge with a club (idk the weapons so I'm guessing) and the Shaolin would use his hooks to grab the club, wheel it around and rip it out of his hands, leaving the Maaori defenseless and vulnerable to the graceful brutality (oxymoron) of the twin hooks. thus, I voted for the Monks

aside from the episode I have a little question. During the new show opening it cycles through the warriors, there is one that confuses me, He is seen wielding a giant black ball on a chain and whipping it across the screen. His symbol is a lion/mythical beast standing on its hind legs, claw out, mouth open. perhaps in front of a shield. was he in a fight yet, as I fail to recognize him. btw, he's just before the green beret with his gun to the screen.

Let me fill u in on the history then. Historically, the Shaolin monks were much like the western knights, they held the idea of "chivary" but were brutal killing machines above all else. The monks, similarly, believe they are the one tasked with ridding the world of evil, and many monks do frequently journey the "world" aka China, ruthlessly killing bandits and other criminals deemed "threat grave enough to break the vow of respect for (the criminal's) life, so that other life may flourish". The monks were also very realistic, they favored long range weapons such as the crossbow and explosives in temple defence as they are usually out numbered, however, these bloody battles inevitably end up in close quarter combat, where the monks would wield weapons forged with great care by weapon smiths from all over China (Afterall, these weapon were tributes to buddha from the weapon smiths). As a result the monks had the best weapons during their time and were ruthless killers in addition to being on the path of enlightenment (and of course the reward of immortality). None lethal weapons are frequently used for training and discipline of the body and mind but in real fighting it was not always used.

kia ora it is awesome to see that we as warriros have been out in the same class as the shaolin warrior, this would have to be the first time that we get to see a maori warrior in action, it is a very secretive art mau rakau alot of people especially Americans would not have a clue about the maori apart from the haka but we as warriors have alot more to offer than what you see. but i am happy that the rest of the world will get to see my warrior culture in action.

The Shaolin monk will win if he can keep away from the Maori warrior, but if they are close the monk will indeed get torn apart.

I think the maori is going to win, not only considering im a maori desendent, but the maori has an intent to kill, unlike the monk who has a last resort to fight. Also, the maori are cannibalistic, and sometimes eat their enemy in battle.Talk about greusome.

The Shaolin Monk could and would not defeat any unarmed man in hand to hand combat. Kung Fu is very flashy but relatively in affective in a fight against other martial artists of other martial arts background. They are extremely skilled and enlightened with the style of death. I am hoping and expecting the Shaolin Monk to come out victorious.

I'm reposting my post for the benefit anyone reading this because people need to know the truth.

Modern forms of Wushu are FAKE, meant for theatre and movie performance to DAZZLE people. You do not stage a fight between a WWF wrestler and an MMA Wrestler.

But that is what they are going to do anyway by putting a FAKE WUSHU theatre trained ACTOR against a brutal viscious Maori warrior.

This series is nonsence!!! The show only focus on weapons and the brute force of these weapons. They neglect the traning (both time and intensity) of each warrior. They also neglect the dicipline of each class of warrior. For example a well trained man with a small knive will defeat an untrain man with a sword.

I don't understand the green stone club to knife comparison. That just doesn't make any sense at all, comparing a 2 lb club to a 1 lb knife isn't really fair, lets do a real comparo and use a 2 lb steel bar.

I am upset about their test for greenstone vs steel. The test that they used was not measuring strength, but instead inertia. The club is obviously heavier then the knife, therefore will of course go through more bricks than a knife.

Once again, the show with so much potential is a miss, rather than hit. Regardless of the outcome, it's almost rigged from the beginning. It's absurd to pit steel weapons vs. non-metal. The show needs to stop using "speed vs. strength" match-ups and use similar warriors. Apache vs. gladiator and knight vs. pirates were stupid.

They should have made this AZTEC vs. Maori. That would be more realistc based on weapon types and fighting skill. As well, the computer program ONLY weighs brute strength, rather than speed or technique. In reality, stun weapons are effective in conglomeration with other weapons, even if they don't have the "kill" shot.

Im thinking that the experts are basing too much on killing ability of the weapons. They are forgetting that the maori isnt going to be putting up much of a fight when all the bones are broken, or they have no weapon anymore. All the monks weapons are likely to either disarm or seriously injure the maori, leaving the maori screwed.

Truthfully I think both warriors are impressive but honestly monks would kill these guys if they had to the Maori I find annoying even if I believe they are "skilled" you could call a caveman skilled. I define skill as restraint and control not brute strength. I am a large man myself so I was pulling for the big guy but if you combined Maori size with Monk training it would be unstoppable. Most of these fights have been interesting I definitely like the Maori spear more then the wax staff. In short both warriors are amazing but I have to give it to the monk.

There is no way a Maori could penetrate the reach of the Shaolin's long-range weapons (i.e. whip chain & steel hooks) and still be grasping his short-range, brute-force weapons, let alone have the capability left to use them.

I would like to see more parity in the tests for tonight's episode! I realize that changing it up is important to keep the viewer's interest up, but I really would have liked to have seen the shark tooth club and the steel hooks used against the SAME cut of meat prepared and presented in the SAME way. If you watch the episode, the hooks are used against an animal torso which uses less muscle and connective tissue, AND is also strung to BOTH the ground and floor, which is going to offer more resistance (and thusly more apparent damage!) than a free-swinging shank with more flesh and fewer joints that can be cut through.

We all know that the Twin hooks won this battle no doubt, with that weapon alone they could have destroyed the Maori even though they used the emei piercers to finish them off the fact is one weapon did that much it was like the Pirate vs Knight (I wanted knight to win oh well). We also found that Green Beret vs Spetnaz that training was key to making the warrior able to wield any weapon and I think that is what gave the Shaolin the edge not mana or size.
