Deadliest Warrior

Blood on the Sand: Viking vs. Samurai

This week, we'll be taking a look at what happens when Vikings and Samurai clash and why, tonight at 10, this will be Deadliest Warrior's bloodiest battle yet.

First off, Geoff, Armand, and I want to thank everyone for all of the insightful comments and emails you guys have sent us. They are all awesome, and we're going to use them to make future episodes even grittier -with more carnage, harder science, and a closer look at our warriors' fighting styles. I thought we should spend some time this week doing a postmortem of the Apache vs. Gladiator fight, but it looks like you guys have done that 100 times over, so let's get to some fresh meat: Viking vs. Samurai.

This is the fight that I wanted to see most, and let me tell you, it does not disappoint. You want to talk about fighting spirit? Here's the key to this battle: no matter what happens with weaponry, tactics, or terrain, these are two warriors who will never back down. Let me repeat that: They. Will. Never. Back. Down.

NEVER.

Both warriors were the absolute apex of their craft, the best at shedding blood in their time and place. The Samurai fights for honor in a way we cannot even begin to imagine from our place of comfort in the modern world. His culture created Seppuku, a form of ritual suicide that a samurai would inflict upon himself, rather than be dishonored or captured in battle. He would be compelled to kill himself by the disgrace or defeat of his lord, rather than face that dishonor. The Samurai fears no death.

At the same time, Vikings were no strangers to death themselves. You're probably familiar with Valhalla (whose name literally means "hall of the slain"), the best realm of the Viking afterlife. The only way into Valhalla was to die in battle, and it had to be honorable battle: if you were not fighting with every last ounce of courage you had in you at the moment you died, you would be sent to the frozen wasteland of hel, the Viking underworld. So while a Samurai would rather meet his death on the field of battle than off it, the Viking practically lusted after a gruesome death at the hands of a worthy foe.

image

It is also worth looking at the most notable examples produced by either class of warrior. The Samurai produced Miyamoto Musashi, arguably the greatest swordsman to have ever lived. Musashi killed his first man when he was 13, and when he was 30, clubbed his most famous opponent to death in duel. He did it with an oar he whittled into the shape of a bokken, or practice sword, on the boat ride to the duel. Musashi did not need a blade to be lethal, and neither will our samurai.

The Vikings on the other hand, are a little harder to sort through, and their histories are pretty well mixed with myth and legend. But we do know that as early as the 9th century, Vikings had made their way into the Mediterranean Sea, where they were adopted as the personal bodyguards of the Byzantine emperors, forming an elite unit known as the Varangian Guard. Evidence of their dominance survives to this day in the graffiti they left in Constantinople, including the Hagia Sophia, which was the largest cathedral in the world for nearly 1,000 years. The Vikings did what they wanted, where they wanted. They could not be stopped.

All that is a lot on fighting spirit. Let's talk hard facts and equipment. In general, the Vikings are going to be bringing robust, heavier arms to this fight, while the Samurai weapons and armor we'll be seeing are lighter, but made to a higher standard. While the Samurai's most famous sword, the Katana, is renowned for its construction, Viking swords possessed a similar, multilayered, high and low-carbon steel construction, although to a lesser degree of refinement. The point being: you can still find katanas from Japan's medieval period in the homes of wealthy collectors today, but most Viking swords now are found on the bottom of river beds or in graves. While there is a gap of about 200 years between the end of the Viking age and the beginning of Japan's medieval period, it's worth noting that one style of sword making is still revered, while the other is all but forgotten.

Armor here is a real apples-to-oranges comparison. While both fighters wore armor made from iron, the Samurai's complex system of iron plates laid over quilted padding offered a different sort of protection from the Viking's mail. Arguably, the Samurai has more points at which his armor can critically fail (but better protection at its strong points), while the Viking has fewer points of failure, but a lower quality of protection throughout the entire system of his armor. Both opponents are going to be bringing different fighting styles to bear, and a lot of that is hard to quantify in so short a space (we haven't even touched on berserkers, or different schools of Samurai swordsmanship).

So before this turns into a chapter from the world's most bloodthirsty History textbook, let me just hit on the science in closing. We pulled out all the stops for this one-testing blades not only on armor and ballistics gel, but the other most accurate test for damage we have: pig carcasses. You see, at the flesh and blood level, a pig isn't built all that different from you or me, and when it comes to muscle, fat, and bone, the multiple layers of a pig's corpse provide a fantastic supplement to the usual gel torso carnage. This is, of course, in addition to the load cells, accelerometers, pressure mats, and scales we're using to digitally gather numbers for our simulation.

In closing, Geoff, Armand, and I all want to know what you think: who will prevail? Neither of these warriors will ever back down, so what happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object? When the howling fury of the frozen North grapples with the iron discipline of the fearless East? Let us know whom you think will win, and after the show airs, what you thought of the episode.

Morituri te salutant,
Max

I'm really rooting for the Viking here but my logic is sort of leaning towards the Samurai in a one on one battle. I've seen both cultures explored recently on History Channel's WARRIORS and the greatest advantage I can give the Vikings is they had more worldly experience. They adopted fighting styles from the worthiest warrior cultures they conquered and even modified their armor to match theirs as a mark of resPect.

I think these warriors are very evenly matched, but I give a slight advantage to the Viking. At medium range, he should have a slight reach advantage, which would tend to act in his favour a bit. Close up, the Viking will have a shield, which can make all the difference. Since both warriors had bows, ranged fighting should be pretty even. In any case, I wouldn't want to take my chances with either of these titans; this should be very interesting. :)

I'll predict the Samurai willl win for the same reason I thought the Indian would come out ahead in the last episode: Superior Long Range weapons. I would think that the Samurai would have a better Bow & Arrow than the Viking.

2ndly, Faster Samurai & weapons will be critical. When fighting to the death, 1st strike usually wins or sets up the 2nd, right?

All that being said, I would think an army of Vikings would be able to overtake an amy of Samurai.

If that had happened, Viking/Samurai descendants would probably rule the world today. Probably for the best they never met.

I vote the Samurai. With my knowledge of both cultures, I would lean to the Viking for their honor and battle lust, but on the other hand the Samurai fights for his lord and would put his life on the line no madder the situation. Overall the Samurai has speed and percision and the Viking has brute strength and is fearless. If in a battle I would want to be the smaller yet more percise and alot faster than be a towering man of muscle and come in with mostley intimidation working with me.

consider the agile samuri with armour, yes samuri can deflect and counter stike well. I mean deflect light weapon counter attacks.

But take the Vikings which was heavy blow after heavy blow. I would think samuri can not deflect heavy blows outright, if samuri gets in close they can counter strike.

samuri could depleat a viking line with arrows, but just the shear wieght of weapon, viking, and attack blows would be hard for a samuri to deflect since the viking would have a mid range attack one on one with a samuria close weapons attack.

my out come samuri long range attack +1, mid range goes to the viking, close range if the samuri can withstand the first blow and counter attack.

I have been looking forward to this fight, and I hope it will be a close one.

In response to the long range, I think it will be a lot closer. Vikings also had bows, perhaps not longbows, but bows nonetheless. And Vikings proved that against a long range enemy, they could still win. The best archers of the west, the Englishmen, were almost completely destroyed byt he Vikings. The Samurai turned archery into an art, but its still an arrow.

Also, the chain mail of the Viking is more designed to block slashing than smashing attacks, which is exactly what the Samurai weapons do. The Samurai armor, although good, stopped being advanced after a certain point and the Samurai focused on perfecting the blade.

All in all, I think it is going to be close, and I cannot wait.

samuri or viking hmmm. Two very deadly warriors. Vikings have a great and Deadly range w/ his axe. But samuri should have range w/ his bow but the viking wears very heavy armor and it should deflect it. The sword of a samuri is long sharp as razors but will it stand up to a large sword. in a range a samuri should be able to shoot many arrows as to a viking throwing few hammers. close combat the viking but if he happens to over judge a swing the viking will surely go down. Samuris do not sword fight it is more of a few fatal swings and its over. So the samuri will when if the viking even jokes a little

Vikings are a lot tougher than people give them credit for - but Samurai deserve the credit they're given. Surprised nobody's mentioned the viking spear. I think that viking arrows will have a tough time versus samurai armor, (the Yumi's a far more powerful bow) -- but the spear carries a lot more force (albeit at a shorter range) and it can also be used as a thrusting weapon. Vikings used them with their shield wall (far more organized than most people give them credit for). Close fight. Like the Viking but this is a really tough matchup - especially 1 vs 1. Samurai will probably win.

I respect both sides highly but however, I personally feel that the individual master instructor on the ways of the Samurai needed to decide upon the use of another analogy when it comes to describing the Vikings.

( That the Viking warrior was like that of the american reservist who was nothing more than a plumber that played warrior one weekend a month. )

I for one am a military reservist a member of the Idaho Army National Guard and a decorated war veteran.

I am a little disgruntled by the comment made. It is my fellow brotheren in arms that make sure that he can safely go home and sleep at night in his cozy little bed. Also let's not forget my fellow men and women soldiers who are still in the field of battle doing so to this day, and those who gave their lives to ensure that he could still do so.

    Sincerely,

    Kyle G. Davis

I have seen a lot of complaints about the timeline. I feel that the samurai didn¿t evolve, because of their beliefs and island isolation placing their technology as about the same as the Vikings which lasted into the 13th century. I feel that the samurai should win most of the time due to weapon accuracy and attack attempts. This is much like MMA where a lighter fighter can attack faster and sustain longer endurance due to loss of less energy. A Viking has great power, but is going to use energy faster due to his size which was genetic to sustain their environment. You also have the weapon weight which will be much lighter for the samurai allowing less energy to be used in attacking blows. Less energy used allows for more attacking blows and when combined with a samurai's accuracy should win out with every weapon. What does a MMA fighter do when he is tired? Let his hands fall down due to loss in energy.

i just finished watching viking vs samurai..... patetic, just like last week.......

I know how this show works no matter what they are going to pick the small, quick warrior over the strong one na matter what...next week spartan vs ninja, bet you anything they'll say the ninja wins.

It was patetic, they said how good and superior the viking armor and weapons were during the entire show and afterwards they say the samurais armor was better, the katana can't break the viking armor but somwhow it did during the fight.....like last week when the gladiator punched the apache and nothing happened to the apache, seriously they need to make this show a little more realistic................

i had hopes for this show.....................

It is Not the size of the Dog in the Fight but the Fight in the Dog. That said, Clearly The Samurai or Saburau were a very effective servant of their respective Lords. The way of Bushido is the way of service, honor and duty to ones Master until Death. Japanese Saburau were the most effective single or small source warriors of their day in the Far East and were to be respected and feared.

The Norse Man or Wikings were Mostly Sea going Warriors and fought most of their Viking on Viking Battles at Sea, ship to ship and there would not have been an effective way for Samurai of the day to win against Vikings at Sea.

On Land Viking Warriors Struck with sudden ferocity and massive power using intimidation and fearless battle tactics.

One on One Viking against Samurai is rediculous on its face for many reasons, mainly being the three Hundred year time difference of their respective peaks.

The Japanese Sword in their day would of course have been far superiour to the iron Sword of the Viking Warrior of his day and in fact would have been able to cut an iron Viking sword in two! However the Favorite weapon of the Viking was the Danish Great Axe and it was simply unstoppable.

In this fantasy, one on one, the Japanese Samurai would be able to defeat the Viking before the Viking knew

he was under threat. One on One and face to face, the veteran Berserker Viking warrior would effectively use his great shield, chain mail and Spangelhelm for defence while cleaving in two the Japanese Man with His Great Danish Axe.

    Valhalla awaits;)

Just watched the show, and while I think it is interesting, I think you totally blow it, when it comes to the combat. All you seem to take into consideration is quality of the weapons and armour. I don't care how many battles you run thru your computer, the output is only as good as the stuff you put in. The size, strength and life style of the Viking warrior, would have led him to defeat the saumurai easily. The only advantage the samurai had was in the quality of his steel. Put your samurai against a Jomsborg Viking or a Varangian and see what would happen. I almost didn't watch the show after last week's show. I am sorry but the way your battle worked out the gladiator had the apache on his back and blasted him twice with his cestus? then stood up and walked away? First the two blasts would have killed the apache, and second the gladiator wouldn't have have got up and leave a live opponent. I didn't disagree with the result, just the way it was depicted. I would have bet on the apache, because you let him carry a bow. You need to take the ranged combat out of it, this should be man on man. I cannot claim to be unbiased in the case of Viking vs samurai, I am a direct descendent of Ragner the Hairy Breeks. I don't know if I will watch next week, ninja (to call a ninja a warrior is an insult) vs. Spartan. I am sure you will come out with a way for the ninja to win.

I was a bit disappointed that the Viking bow was not included in the discussions, but I'm glad the numbers came out nearly even. I don't have any issues with either of these warriors being victorious; IMO, they are equally lethal.

Again, however, I'm miffed at the unnecessary trash talk. Seems a bit disrespectful of the accomplishments of both warrior societies on the show.

As a Historian and a man this show is amazing, and while I find it fascinating to see unusual and a-historical combinations, I think it would also be really neat to see actual historical combo's too. One-on-one's can be very different than fighting en masse...

What the hell, ok it was sooo close, but i have one problem, the guy hitting and using all the weapons for the samurai....what the shit is he so big for???, all the hits he was generating were just as or more powerful than the Vikings, no offence to samurai or asians in general but back then there was no weightlifting, so those crazy powerful hits he was doing i would love to see the other guy for the samurai hit with those numbers, they won because those numbers were put into the comp assuming they all hit that hard.....no way and it was still close, the vikings gave the roman empire its first loss and raped the englishmen, they never lost, they also ate a mushroom that gave them a druglike rush if they were losing so they could not feel pain, and sorry samurai dont carry all those weapons at once, vikings do however.

Take all what i just said and put the little samurai guy on the show to test the same hits, and re-generate the numbers I know Vikings would win, everyone in history has had losses but the vikings the roman empire couldnt touch them the brits then they become more peaceful and established their land so they stopped, every other warrior culture was defeated into retirement, and they were not stupid or slow, they had footwark just like the samurai (look it up) and fighting styles, i think if the little guy ( more like a samurai would be built like ) swung those blows and thats all they changed vikings would still win, it was a difference of 22 fights C'MON

Once again the culture that is allowed, by spike, to use a bow wins. They have to do something to keep their viewers. I wonder if that is deliberate. The bow is one of the most common cross culture weapons. I want to know who decides what weapons to use and how they are used. They have to do something to keep their viewers. Americans are totally in love with eastern martial arts. I mean after all they have been around for so long and are currently being practiced. They must of course be the best because they are still in use.

This attitude completely discounts that the Japanese feudal period ended in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Western civilization had and extra 200 years to discard its martial tradition in favor of easier to use and train firearms.

I sure that spikes executives are jumping up and down with joy over the controversy this show causes. .

Can anyone tell me the difference between the glaive/partisan and the Naganata. Not much really light fast short sharp blades on the end of a staff. Lets us also consider the full name of the Viking spear. It was called a hewing spear. It was along bladed weapon and there are historical accounts of the Vikings using the hewing spear in the same way as a Naganata.

Spike made a big deal out of pointing to the fact that the samurai used steel weapons and steel armor. Lets not forget Vikings also had Steel. To make steel you just add carbon to iron. At the height of the Viking raids Vikings had steel and used it.

This show is completely artificial and subjective. Does anyone else find it odd that the what ever culture the computer programmer favors wins. I wonder why that is.

They should do a kind of elemination compatition and see who the best warriors actually are and to make it fair peir them up with the same ara so no guns are going against bows.

I had no problem with the show, gladiators were trained only when they were at the grounds, not their entire lives, they were slaves and thieves, the apache were trained from birth, thats a big edge..........The viking however........read above get some guys who know more about Viking culture, and with only 23 more fights to victory, the fact that the asian guy hitting for the samurai was overly big and much stronger than a samurai would be is all that computer needs to figure the viking would win, thats all i would want changed to make it fair, i dont care about bows or the fact that samurais never carried all those weapons at a time, just get a more realistic guy for the computer to annalize hits from and BOOM samurai 0 Viking 1 easy

this is how it works, small quick warriors with overconfident and arrogant "coaches" win.

    The end.........

i wish they would make this more realistic......like they tested the katana against the viking chainmail and nothing happened and in the end magically the samurai killed the viking by breaking the chainmail..........really?

    WOW

i find it hilarious that most of the people commenting right now find this result illogical. actually, the fact that both episodes had the "smaller" man win is a very logical result. in battle, speed and dexterity will usually win against sheer force and size. the Vikings (and Gladiators) had the advantage in power, but they weren't as nimble and technique-oriented as the Samurai and the Apache.

and the video at the end of the episode is only for entertainment value -- do you honestly believe that the Apache could have taken that cestus to the face, or the Samurai could have blocked that great axe?

regardless, these hypothetical battles that occur in the computer are merely hypothetical; there's no real way to tell if a Samurai could have beaten a Viking unless you had a time machine and did it a thousand times.

Clearly there exists a bias against any White Warriors on this program!

I find the results to be bs, at best. If, IF, you took into a factor armor, which its clearly that they don't, the viking wins 800 times. Yes, the japanese was accurate, but thats at a stationary target that isn't shielding his face. Now tell me, what warrior with a shield would sit stll and not guard their face? Meanwhile, the light infantry weapons of the japanese could not punture the armor of the heavy vikings, while they could break the armor of the japanese with any of their weapons, easily. Give me a break, cleary, the armor of the vikings more than makes up for the quickness of the japanese. Clearly, this guy's "computer model" favors light fast infantry, but actual history tells a different story, that every time heavy infantry faces off agaist light infantry, they win unless its in mountainous terrain, which so far hasn't been one of the factors that they add. Maybe they should try to be more accurate and say that the group that has defenses that can't be broken except by heavy weapons, but wait, then the indians and japanese would have gotten owned....kind of like what happened to them both in actual history. Just a word for thought.

I call BS! First of all I'll leave out the fact they kept perpetuating a great myth about the vikings as blood thursty animals, as well as the samuri being some uber warrior.

Second should also be pretty relevant, they were stunt people!! they are trained to make big theatric displays of nonsense that had no use on the battle field! What warrior in his right mind would let some "samurai" beat his shield to a pulp and then break out his sword! Same goes for the "viking" using his sword like a rapier. I can't believe how much BS this show was putting forth! I would be embarassed if I was the guest on the show. I can go on for ever with this! Like how they tested the weapons... both sides got to make big freaking swings at things... EPIC FAIL again! Not likely to happen in a shield wall or in massed ranks at all!

They also left out a big fact that the vikings used bows in war just as the samurai did... EPIC FAIL on Spike! This crap was so one sided it did both sides a disservice!

Lastly these two warriors would have never meet one on one! It would have been numerous warriors on each side duking it out. One on one fights look good on screen, but all the crap goes right out the window facing hordes of other people (on your side and the others) Their is just no room for all that stunt man BS they were doing.

My advice... cancel the show before you make an even bigger ass out of your self by pitting a spartan against a ninja! Spartans strength and fighting ability came from the fact they worked together!!!!! as a unit!!!! Please stop this show imidiately! stick to UFC fights ok.
