Deadliest Warrior

Blood on the Sand: Pirate vs. Knight

Tonight at 10pm, Deadliest Warrior will pit Pirate against Knight, cunning against tradition, and lead against steel in a duel to the death. Before we get down to analyzing tonight's fight, I just want to thank you guys for making The Aftermath a success. We've been keeping up with all of your comments and feedback, and it's great that you guys are keeping the conversation going. I'm definitely looking forward to doing this week's, so be sure to leave a comment for us after Pirate vs. Knight premieres.

But on to the matter at hand: What makes this fight unique and interesting, and what sort of strategies will our combatants need to use if they want to best one another?

To begin with, I'm tremendously excited about the sheer range of possibilities in this matchup. Of all our fights this season, this is the one that came closest to actually occurring in history -- we've just taken the liberty of smooshing two sections of timeline, the High Middle Ages and the Golden Age of Piracy, closer together in order to see what results when they overlap.

You may already be thinking to yourself: "Well, this is pretty cut and dried: we still have gunpowder weapons today, but you don't see anyone using steel plate armor in modern warfare," but the history of the matter isn't that simple.

Gunpowder weapons first became widely adopted in Europe in the 14th century, first as cannons, and then quickly progressing to handheld artillery (the harquebus, or literal "hand cannons" in many cases) in the 15th century. However, plate armor evolved in kind, and early guns were ineffective at penetrating armor at a distance. But by the late 17th century, improvements had been made to musket technology that allowed guns to fire projectiles with greater muzzle velocity, and consequently, bypass armor.

But accuracy remained an issue. Early muskets lacked rifling in their barrel (simply put: a rifle puts spin on a bullet to give it a stable flight path -- think of what happens when you throw a football with proper spin. Now imagine throwing the ball without that spin. Awkward, isn't it?). To compensate for a lack of accuracy, armies at the time relied on massed firepower -- shooting became a numbers game more than anything.

I understand you gave the Knight a crossbow so he had a long range weapon, but the true cream of the crop aristocrat knight hated the crossbow. They even tried to get it banned at one point as an "inhumane" weapon. I guess it's ok if you allowed crossbow usage, otherwise the pirate would punch holes in Knight armor with his long range dominance.

im a little confused now why put the knight tec at a specific point where all his armor is made to stop bullets.

why not instead use a older knight tec and instead put him in full plate with a shield and the other weapons he would have from what i can see it seems sort of unbalenced.

The fight seems even more unbalenced by the fact that you took the pirates only advantage of the range and distroyed them with the cross bow

I predict Knight will win 70% of fights. Pirate will win 30% based on his musketry, but more often than not, he will miss, and the Knight will crush him in close combat.

I agree about the Knight winning, however the big and only advantage the Pirate has is his gun. If he gets a good shot, the knight will die. The guns back then were pretty inaccurate though and the knight does have armor to deflect some shots. I think the percentage advantage of the 1000 simulations will show the Knight as the winner.

Pirates weren't only feared for the fact they had guns. They were just as easily adaptable to melee combat. However, when you have a weapon as powerful as the blunderbuss, what is the point of first attacking with a cutlass or rapier which are more showy and less effective.

Like I said in the Blunderbuss sneak preview, Pirates used a whole mess of different types of grenades (including smoke bombs) and carried a whole mess of different guns (Multiple pistols, Blunderbuss, Musket) so by the time the Knight gets within melee range the dude should be in severe pain from several shots scored.

I actually had a hard time choosing. The bullets from Pirates could penetrate the Knights plate and chain mail armor. But at the time it was to take time to reload. What if the pirate misses? The armor of the knight would be hard to penetrate with the pirates cutlass ( if he gets one). Just one thing will the knight move slow due to the weight of the armor. But overall i go for the knight cause i think the knight was trained his whole life for combat etc. The pirate were mainly just people hired by the British to take french and Spanish ships. Its tough to say who wins.

And i bet money if the knight wins lol

knight vs pirate is tough because if the pirate does manage to hit the knight with his guns knight will go down, but if he doesnt and it becomes a melee fight, knights sword, morning star, and maybe shield, will crush the pirate because he has no armour and the cutlass probly would break if hit by a broadsword.

What I would like to see is how a knight's armor would hold up against a cannonball. It's not likely that a cannon would hit in a one on one fight but it would still be awesome to see the desruction if it actually did hit.

I have to start by saying that the average knight had far more combat training than the average pirate. Towards the late Golden Age of Piracy most European pirates were actually recruited after being robbed by them. I also have to note that Pirates have been so romanticized that people tend to forget that they preyed on weaker ships limping into port. Black Beard's favorite tactic was to wait in a haven for hurricane season so that he could hijack crippled merchant ships. Pirates despite guns were actually used to fighting close quarters, distance was not their specialty. Knights however are also romanticized but in a different way, instead of people viewing them as poem writing chivalrous gentlemen, you need to read the facts. Knights were born into nobility and had everything taken care of from their horses to housework so that they could be called on to fight at a moments notice. Even in the early middle ages some knights started their training before the age of ten, they are ruthless killers and so I have to give the edge to them.

When somebody says the word "armor" what's the first image that pops into your head? It's probably a knight, isn't it? No Warrior in history had more protective armor. Even if he gets shot by armor piercing ammo, the impact of such primitive guns would be less severe and not immediately lethal. If it even hits it's mark and doesn't take forever to reload. Also, does the knight have a shield? Because if that's the case, pirate ammo would have to penetrate both. And double penetration is a game stopper.

    Stop giggling!

I suppose the Pirate would be faster than a (dismounted) knight. Getting drunk frequently on a swaying ship would probably do wonders for his balance when he's sober and on Terra Firma. If the Pirate could drag out the fight long enough, dodging the Knight's attacks, he could probably tire him out and use that hot, heavy armor against him. But these fights last two minutes, so that ain't gonna happen.

But what it all comes down to is that it would take one of the Knight's attacks to kill a Pirate and several the way around.

My Theory is that they'll both die of dysentery though.

I would like to say hat the knight would win but with the way these fights are done i think the pirate would win even though the knight is more trained for battle and that most pirates were little more than hired thugs,.

There are alot more things that come into battle that what they put in there computer like the skill of each man,the attitude, size and strength, speed, his constitution, health also weather terrain.not to mention courage, age, skill level

I believe the knight in this case is fully armoured. Also, the Pirate won't ever get a chance to reload, since it would take an expert at least 15 seconds to reload a pistol. He's better off throwing it and drawing his sword at that point. I think people will be suprised by how quickly an armoured knight can move, they really were quite impressive.

been having trouble commenting but here goes again. First I say the knights win because the pirate experts they hired are lame. and here is why. They asked them how they would deal with the morning star and they didn't immediately say Boarding pike. The pike
was invented for infantry to fight armored knights. The boarding pike was a little shorter than a traditional pike but still long enough to keep the knight at a distance and poke holes in his armor. Also it has a hook that is great for tripping knights with. It is a weapon that the is forgotten in most pirate movies but was a weapon that any fighting crew would be well versed in. The pirate experts are also going to loose because they are out of shape dudes that have no real knowledge of the hand to hand techniques that were available to pirates. for that see my next post.

This show is horse shit. The methods used are hardly scientific, but even when they do manage to find a demonstrable conclusion the "experts" completely ignore it. For example the grenado vs. platemail that happened not two minutes ago. "Pirates have the edge" with a weapon that was proven to be unable to penetrate even one layer of armor?! I call bullshit.

Okay every one just assumes that all pirates were dirty drunkard bullies. When in fact many of them including Black beard were highly disciplined. Also a fighting crew was different than a regular old merchantman crew. It meant that they were sailors that were trained to fight. As for martial training and the match up. If we are pitting a knight against a pirate we aren't going to go out and grab some drunk off the docks we grab the most badass pirate we can find. History has lots of really badass pirates. For example Jean Lafitte
was a master duelist and marksman. His crime empire was a well disciplined machine. HE was by far not a drunkard nor filthy.
Heck in one account he was challenged to fight by three men once while he was on a date. He excused himself drew his sword and killed all three. I am not sure if it was one at a time or all at once but I do know it was in the same place and time of day.

A couple more things: European martial arts were still alive and well in the days of piracy, and most boys would have at least witnessed if not learned from their dads how to fight. Many styles of wrestling were available, Boxing in that day included knowledge of not only fisticuffs but also submissions, swordsmanship and stick or cudgel fighting, Purring(shin kicking was a popular sport) as was single stick and quarterstaff and those were all available to the common man. Also there is Chasaun (a predecessor of savate which was developed by french sailors. Last but not least rough and tumble fighting also existed and that was mma with biting and eye gouging. Finally a pirate crew was often I diverse bunch and men who work in teams teach each other what they know. Some crews had not only europeans but freed slaves. Many slaves were captured solders of african tribes.
Non of this will be talked about in the show or acknowledged by any one. That is another reason the pirates will loose.

These test are so inconclusive. They do not factor in the fighters size at all. They do not factor in the blunderbus only one shot and misfires. I enjoy the show but its pretty silly the way to decide the winner.

A better way to chose a winner would be to have dozens of experts in history, martial arts, and weapon combat to vote after more thorough testing. I guess they have to dumb it down for 75% of the viewers. There clearly isnt enough data to be even factored in a computer program.

I don't understand this show. The computer programmer, the guy with all the power in the show (he gets to program the simulations) is obviously biased beyond belief! Every show that has aired has had the warrior that he favors wins. Coincidence? I think not. Look at the facts, ignore your prior knowledge and put your biased behind and program the damn facts. You mean to tell me a flintlock pistol that is inaccurate and unable to penetrate armor from 12 FREAKING FEET gives the pirate any sort of advantage? Get real.

This matchup is rediculous. The knight is wearing 60+ lbs of uselessness in this fight. No knight would ever get close enough to a pirate to do anything on foot, leaving only two ways to get into striking distance. 1)horseback and 2)crossbow. The horse gets shot (or grenade) and the crossbow requires the use of the foot to load. Plus, its not the like the pirate is going to stand there and wait for the knight to get into position.... they're pirates. If a pirate can't kill a knight before he gets stabbed then he's not worthy of being a pirate.

Seems to me they did a bad job on armor vs blunderbuss or flintlock for that matter. A knight also has chain mail which would be what would be most effective against those weapons. I know people who wear chain mail today as soldiers in combat.

Ok my comment on the whole crossbow thing is the archers of the middle ages were the low class of the army the knights looked down on them. Next this show is not taking into fact that 1) Knights were slow they wore anything from 75 to over a hundred pounds of steel. 2) Depending on the helm a knight couldn't see anything except what was infront of them.

I'm am so disappointed with this. How is it that the Knight was hit with bullets each time, and so affected each time, while the Pirate was hit with the double-headed morningstar no less than three times (in the head at least once - which was a kill in the beginning demo), hit with an arrow in the leg, and still managed to shoot the Knight.
I'm seriously questioning their use of logic.
