Deadliest Warrior

Blood on the Sand: Ninja vs. Spartan

This week on Deadliest Warrior, we're pushing stealth and strength to their theoretical limits when a Spartan squares off against a ninja.

This is a hell of a matchup, and surprisingly enough, it was the first show we ever did. Ninja vs. Spartan started life as our pilot way back in March of 2008. But we're not here to talk about making TV, we're here to talk about bringing the pain. Our Spartan hoplite was the tank of ancient Greece the most heavily armed and armored warrior of his place and time. However, the ninja's reputation is almost mythical at this point -- and he's playing with a higher level of technology. So let's break down our fighters:

For starters, you can throw out most of what you learned from 300 right out the window. We're dealing with real Spartan gear, not bare-chested dudes prancing around the battlefield in a leather diaper and a cape. We're looking at a much heavier armor situation. First, our Spartan will have his aspis, the hoplite's legendary shield to hunker down behind. But to back it up, he's bringing a helmet, a cuirass (that's a breast plate with a back piece), and his greaves. Properly aligned, the only vulnerable points on his body are his eyes, his fingers, and his toes -- which may be the only targets of opportunity our ninja will need.

If the ninja wants to win this fight, he'll have to play to his strong suit: he needs to distract, evade, flank, or otherwise outmaneuver the Spartan. Once he gets around the shield, perhaps behind the Spartan, then more vulnerabilities start to open up -- the entire back of the Spartan's legs, his neck, and his arms. However, he'll still have the back of that cuirass to contend with, and the Spartan's core, his vital organs and life functions, are well protected.

Let's get philosophical for a minute: There's an old Greek saying about the foxes and hedgehogs. Coined by the poet and mercenary Archilochus, it goes like this: "the fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing." I don't need to tell you who's who, but if you stop and think about it, this saying is the key to everything you need to know about this fight. How to turn that key, however, I leave up to you.

This is such a sick show, but I was really disappointed when you did a ninja episode with him fighting anything other than a pirate. :/

Spartan stomps, as far as I'm concerned. Lol

If the spartan doesn't win i'm going to be very upset, i actually just recently got into this show only seeing one episode( samuari vs. viking) and despite it being a little controversial i totally expected the viking to lose. But that argument is for another time, tonight i fully expect the spartan to win, and not because i'm envious of gerard butler's manly abdomen but because of the defenses. As long as the spartan can see this opponent he will win, no matter what little tricks the ninja may have, one strike and the fight is over. SPARTA!!!!

I don't think it is a "dumb show for dummies" but I do agree that it is not a in depth study of the two opposing warrior cultures and I am moderately concerned about their "computer program" which determines the victor.

Yes i agree they should put less emphasis solely on the weapons and more on the characteristics of the actual warriors themselves, but this is what we have for now and im content if anyone can do better get in touch with a network

If a confrontation between these 2 occurred with no element of surprise to tilt the field, my personal opinion is that the Spartan would win. If surprise was a factor, I'd go with the Ninja as quick and dirty was their way. Based on what the program has offered thus far, I'd say the ninja will win after the battles are run through the computer simulator. First we had an Apache take a Gladiator, then a Samurai waste a Viking. What were the common elements between the 2 winners so far? They were both typically armed with weapons that were lighter, more agile, and more versatile and they themselves were more agile due to either a lack of armor or lighter armor in the case of the Samurai. As for the 2 newest combatants, the Ninja possesses such dynamic weapons and lacks the armor so that's what I think will happen.

I'm watching the viking vs samurai episode now.

    Barely keeping my lunch down.

I can't speak to the viking stuff, but JAPANESE I know.

Good Lord -- those "documentary" scenes ---- where did they get that monumental pile of bogus "Japanese" armour? Hell, I've never seen anything that bad. Bogus beyond belief.

And that Japanese weapon expert, who supposedly specialized in kyudo? He apparently doesn't know how to draw the bow or release. That's NOT an expert. It's like they handed some guy off the street a Japanese bow and said "shoot this."

    Good God. This is pathetic.

I'm interested in how they portray this. The phalanx was a fearsome to behold, but it had vulnerabilities facing a lighter mobile foe that could attack the sides; as seen in the battle of Lechaeum, where the Spartan phalanx, with no support whatsoever, was beaten by a force of javelin throwers. The Spartans couldn't catch their more mobile foe. Or Pydna, when the Macedonian phalanx got separated, and the more mobile Romans got in within range.
It will be most interesting to see how this show goes. The only chance the Ninja has is to harass the Spartan until the Spartan makes a mistake.
And tricks win battles. They're called tactics.

im sorry but this show is stupid. but some reason i cant stop watching it. most of the wins rely on BS. the gladiator gets hit with an arrow before the fight even starts same with the viking and now with the ninja they are testing glass in the eyes and pepper spray. come on that does not show who is the deadliest warrior is just who has the better tricks to avoid actual fighting. if i saw a special forces guy walking down the street and out of nowhere i mace the guy and try to kill him ill bet that i would win. does that make me the better warrior? no. they test warriors who are way too different. if they tested any combo with the apache, ninja, samurai that would be good and any combo with the gladiator, viking, and spartan that would be good. but as long as we are having outrageous battles im hoping for next week to be a marine against a caveman. but cool the show just ended and SPARTA won sweet thats why i watch this show. suck on that ninja

I watched the show. an all points looked valid but for a small part. the ninja's most powerful weapon was stealth as well as cunning. It would seem to me that the ninja would do more guerilla attacks. sure the spartians would win in a head to head but what about the true test?

Just finished watching it. I have to say they really screwed up on the simulation. First off, when the ninja saw the spartan, he would have just used his blowgun from the tree. Also, he would have tried to strike him from above w/ the ninjato, he would have gone for the back of the knees. Finally, if he had thrown ground glass into the spartan's eye, it would have been more along the lines of a permanent injury.

I do medieval combat, this does not seem to be a true test. It dose not take in to account the ability of the individal.

Also the Spartans fought as a unit where as the ninja fought solo or as a scatered team. Needless to say that the ninja would have struck at night, with the goal of killing with out confrontation, the minute of confrontation the ninja would have felled, hid, and made plans to stike again later.

The Spartans would have worked as a team, any one attacking solo would have attacked not one Spartan but many Spartans.

These two warriors have two totaly diffrent styles and as a one on one combat it would be who can adapt quickest and take advantage of the weekeness of their opponent first.

there is no way the ninja would have lost. spartans are standing fighters were as ninjas are shadow fighters. the ninjas tactic alone would be more than enough for the spartan. you guys need to find a way to put tactics into your equations. that sucked big time

this show is pure crap. I thought just the first episode was bad, but is getting worse and worse. In short:
    1. allows adrenaline take over. all the "experts" till now are a bunch of inferiority complex specimens. poor judgement.
    2. what are you guys actually compare? in what context? an apache vs a gladiator in a forest? why not in an arena? one with the knife (which they are masters of, hat off to them) the other with the shield and gladia? (I hope you start seeing how ridiculous the apache win was...) Anyways. It's incredibly difficult to set the stage for a "fair for both" fight, so difficult actually that is on the verge of absurd. Right now you guys compare ninja vs spartans!!!! Why not spartans vs M1 Abraham tank?
    3. the psychology is completely off. Can't see how an apache could have the psychological advantage over a gladiator (as the show implied in the first episode - "the apaches were a nation of worriers" crap)
    4. the matching of weapons is idiotic... Samurai sword vs axe and samurai bat vs viking sword??? Why not sword vs sword and axe vs bat? WTF??? not to say, even relying on the weapons comparison is idiotic...
    5. the analysis is idiotic. How on earth to you believe that a samurai that gets an axe full force on his helmet (although doesn't get "through"), can still stand up? Why don't you put a helmet on and get an axe hit, see how able are you afterward?

anyway, let's say, ninja wins tonight. What's next? Ninja vs sniper? phuleez... I hope I don't give you ideas...

I figured the Spartan would win but not because I was going for the spartan but because theyre the popular guy right now. This whole fight was full of suck. I get that the computer said the Spartan would win (really 65%? that seems too high to me) most of the time but theyve got to work on how they portray these battles. First off the Spartan seemed to know the Ninja was right behind him. Is he psychic now? And did he catch the ball on the end of the kusarigama or something? Right. Then hes able to shake off glass powder that was thrown directly in his face, and the ninja ends up giving away his element of surprise.

This whole battle made no sense and I knew the ninja was screwed from the get go. At no point in that battle did the ninja have the upper hand. Im not really complaining about the result since I figured the Spartan would win. But the way they short-changed the ninja was what got on my nerves.

Well if the Ninja's greatest strength was stealth and cunning, the sPartan's greatest strength was his teammates. I agree that a ninja would have probably waited until nightfall and, as the expert said, killed the sPartan in his sleep. Actually, that would have probably been difficult too, as sPartans were notoriously bisexual and slept in baracks with other sPartans.

Also, most ninjas were were simple farmers when they weren't out ninja-ing in the night. sPartans ritualistically assassinated the Helot popuilation who were always on their toes on account of their getting ritualistically assassinated. It was an exercise in stealth. One might turn the tables and have a sPartan killing a ninja in HIS sleep.

So, lemme understand this. In Viking vs Samurai, Samurai wins due to his ability to exploit weakness in armor during the fight. Spartan, with almost the same gear as a viking (spear + shield as primary) will win vs a Ninja...when a Ninja is designed to kill a Samurai? Lets get real, all weapons have killing potential when they connect. The ninja wins in range and agility, but just happens to connect about 35% of the time? Doesn't sound like the Spartan fought a real ninja with that data. I don't think a black ninja would be fighting in broad daylight either. Camo, better weapons, better tactics, better ability = victor. Spartan would get owned.

If these two really fought the "fight" would be over in about a minute. Because thats how long it would take the poison from that dart to react. No ninja in his right mind would ever try to sneak up behind a heavily armored man and stab him. He'd chill in that tree, whip out his fukibari (blowgun) and give the Spartan a quick death. This ninja must have skipped a couple classes or something.

It¿s a very unique match up, two different eras of fighting. I would give it to the Spartans for their group fighting style, but individually the ninja would be the last standing. Even with the match up of statistics they had, the portrayal of one-on-one fighting was incorrect. The "experts" also failed to execute the methods of the ninja appropriately. Majority of the moves were lacking detail in maneuvers and also a confrontational battle in hand to hand is a last resort. Distance, accuracy, and stealth prove fatal to any foe whose armor is subjective. At the beginning of the scene the ninja had the advantage to strike from behind with dart, poison would have been an easy start, and the use of the kusari-gama, would have been more effective.

I definitely agree with EraserRain & BBAGuyver01. It seemed as if the Spartan just walked it off. I dont think anyone would get away after an attack like that.

worst simulation, spartan would lose. i agree, a dart while in the tree would be the 1st attack and there would be no stand and fight. the ninja if blocked or losing his advantage would evade/escape and come back when the advantage of surprise would be his again.

plus ask any convict who has been maced/pepper sprayed to the eyes. you don't just shake that off in a second or two, not to mention getting powered glass in the eyes. by the time they figured that fight should be over, that spartan would have already been blinded or close enough to not matter

I watched the Ninja VS spartian and I feel that the show did not have the Ninja use what they are known for using the terrain, using traps, and being the silent killer they are. Yes in a head on fight a Ninja would not last against a Spartian but a Ninja would not get into that type of fight and if the Ninja ended up that way he would use many of the weapons that disable a attacker while he retreats like foot spikes. The point I found alittle over the top is that the spartian shield is very powerful but with the speed of a Ninja mixed with their skill if the spartian did not deliver a death blow the Ninja would be smart enough to attack the arm that swings the shield. I really enjoy the show.

I want to know what kind of "data" they are using to determine the victor. I'm pretty sure that although a shield can kill you, so can a blowdart. Every weapon has the ability to kill when it connects, or else it wouldn't be used in battle! I'm sure if a ninja didn't fight like a ninja, stood toe to toe with a spartan who wasn't with his army, both would die for not being a true warrior of their class. I guess they don't consider tactics to be a very important role in determining victory.

China had armored soldiers called Samurai. They had better armor than spartans (steel vs bronze ftw) and weapons for that matter, even used calvary. Ninja's adapted their weapons to fight these warriors and their tactics as well. There is a reasons ninja's didn't armor themselves like a tank, they found a better way to fight and win.

Come to think of it, even today war is won with range, technology, and tactics...kinda sounds like all of the advantages a ninja had over spartan. This show fails.

i understand the show took away the ninjas greatest asset...surprise....but they also took away the spartans greatest asset...his companions.....im not trying to dis the ninja i understand taking down the samurai was no small feat...but i just dont understand how in open combat with both warriors being aware of the others presence how the ninja would win...in order to do that he would have to kill the heavily armored spartan without getting struck once...sure he may be able to pull this off a few times 35% but theres no way a spartan would lose without striking his opponent once...in this case an opponent who had virtually no protection...one strike and the ninja loses...and as for the ninjas having no honor its true whether they care or not they attacked with surprise and ith their opponents having no idea they were about to be attacked.. that sound slike a lack of integrity to me

What I didn't like about the Ninja vs. Spartan was that they had the ninja sneak up on the Spartan (which is accurate) but then yells out and allows the Spartan to turn around. A true Ninja would have just snuck up and slit his throat. Not scream outloud and alert the Spartan.. That Shield was badass though. Not unlike the Vikings, which the Samurai whipped and they said the Ninja would make easy work of a Samurai... but loses to the Spartan because of the shield??...A little ironic there.

Either way it's a great show.
