Deadliest Warrior

Blood on the Sand: Green Beret vs. Spetsnaz

Tonight at 10pm, Deadliest Warrior pulls the Cold War out of the deep freezer, and when Spetsnaz confronts Green Beret, mutually assured destruction is a guarantee.

This week we're looking at our most modern matchup to date, a confrontation between Spetsnaz and Green Beret. These are two warriors who fall squarely in the category of elite modern soldiers.

The formal name for each force includes the words "Special Forces." Green Beret is the colloquial name we apply to the United States Army Special Forces, while the full title of the Spetsnaz can be transliterated as "Voyska Spetsialnogo Naznacheniya," a name that also contains the phrase "special forces" or "special purpose." But what sets them apart from one another, and frankly, what makes them both "special?"

Astute readers will point out that there are different Spetsnaz forces within different branches of the Russian Federation's military, intelligence, and internal affairs services, a tradition held over from the Soviet Union, who oddly enough, borrowed the practice of internal police and gendarmes from the Russian Empire before them. However, the Spetsnaz who dealt primarily with fighting on foreign soil, were Spetsnaz GRU.

It is also important to make note here that we are looking at Cold War-era fighters, our Spetsnaz being Soviet Spetsnaz, drawn from the late '80s, while our Green Berets are drawn from the same time period.

The Green Berets, have a shorter tradition, having been formally established in 1952. Their origins can be traced back to units under command of the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) in World War II, like many of the U.S. Military's other clandestine or otherwise "special" forces. Still, their legacy isn't quite as long as that of their counterparts.

OMG, what is the matter with all the whining from the US? Is that what the country has been reduced to? A bunch of deluded, whiny, sour-losers? Just STOP, it's embarassing. Greenhat, Tinman, you seriously need to suck it up, brothers. The ballistic knife was NOT inaccurate by any stretch of the imagination. The blade was NOT put back on target by the glass balls, how dare you try and contradict the evidence. The glass balls clearly moved the blade OFF COURSE, but it STILL hit nearly dead-center of the target. I agree that it might be hard to aim and fire that accurately in a combat situation, but the WEAPON ITSELF was not inaccurate. If you want to complain about unfairness in the end result, how about the instance in the Taliban v IRA showdown which showed the Taliban accidentally killing one of their own, thus enabling an IRA win? Which other episode featured a 'home goal' by any of the group fights? If you want to call BS on a result, it would be that one, but not this one. The green berets came across as arrogant and condescending, there was none of that from the Spetznas guys...

    Peace

Okay really, a E tool is a green berets in close weapon. Think about it now, the best army in the world, with the most advanced gear.......and you give them a shovel???........Wow, great thinking you guys. Aside from that, good show all in all. The only thing i think your overlooking is the factor of the individual people. Im not sure that can be simulated. In afghanistan I saw a man get shot 27 times and still keep coming. Just something to think about.

I would like to know where "Max Geiger" got his information. WHO USES AN E-TOOL AS A SPECIAL WEAPON!!!!

I am an active duty Green Beret and I have never used an e-tool for anything other than to bery my feces. Just because a few guys used it in a fallback situation does'nt mean we have it in our arsenal. Why didnt the sniper test hold more weight? If they cant get to within 800 meters of you how can they use their little innacurate knife? How about our special weapon being the MK 48 lightweight machine gun, it is man portable over long patrols and is superior in reliability, reload and accuracy than a PKM that the Ruski's use. This whole episode just pisses me off whenever I see the rerun. Russian forces ,special or not, got their butts handed to them by the Taliban. If I remember correctly, the Green Berets kicked the Taliban from power in a few short months. History is written with our superiority and that holds more weight than your sorry ass favoured tests.

I did not like this show at all.... How can you say a little pocket knife that can fire its blade is better than a sharpened shovel? The shovel has range and better killing power. The ballistic knife you have to get up close because there is no way that spring loaded object is accurate. Try shooting a spring loaded airsoft gun, its not accurate at all. Plus, if you watch the blade in slow motion it starts to flip around, but was sent back on course by the glass ball. I don't see it delivering a kill shot due to its lack of accuracy. Also it didn't help that the green bret sucked with his side arm. If he actually was good that pistol is alot better than the little pistol the spetnaz had. Don't get me wrong the Spetnaz are great soldiers, but I believe the Green Bret should have won. After this episode I question their tests and simulation program.

Heh, I can´t stop laughing to all U.S. patriots who cry and rage because of Green Berets losing to Spetnazis in some idiotic entertainment show. The whole setup for the series is crap: do you really think you can measure and compare people´s fighting skills with some crappy *computer program* and a few days of testing different weapons? Computer can never take into account everything that´s involved in a battle. The show is still good entertainment, if you won´t take it too serious.

P.S. Sorry about my bad english!

i have watched every episode of your show and i have to say this is the first time i disagree with your conclusion and my father was a Spetsnaz in the late 70. before he meet and married my mom. And even he agrees that the GREEN BERET would kick ass and wipe the floor with them. He says it was actually a rather lazy group they didnt do many maneuvers or spend much time on the practice range or fighting hand to hand. He says that in the last 40 years they have all gotten kinda soft in the tummy. And i also know that TO THIS DAY the green beret are put through HELL just to even be Thought of for that job. Then you spend an extra 6 to 8 weeks on just Special forces training. so to put it simply. I SO TOTALLY DISAGREE. Its not always the weapon but the MEN who carry them.

Privet vsem, Like Sonny said, they didn't choose the weapons, ballistic knife was 30 years ago, now they use better weapons, They have much better weapons now, and better training, why are you guys being such assholes for saying that Americans would have won? My brother is in Green Berett so I think they both did good.

This show was about an ex Spetsnaz operator versus an ex Green Beret. Sonny was obviously a great operator during his time, and performed well in the tests. If you plug in data from these tests to represent the two different units, then obviously the person that hit the most targets will get the edge. Patriotism aside, let's be realistic. Sonny did better on the tests. Hands down. Does that mean ALL Spetznas are at his level of training? I think not. Does that mean all SF operators are going to get the same score as the ex SF operator on the show? I think not. When gauging the "toughness" of the training...that is irrelevant. BUDS and Army combat diver qualification are probably some of the most physically intensive courses in the world...but guess what? Suck fests and swimming have little to do with combat marksmanship and assaulting. Likewise, Spetnsaz low crawling through pig blood has little to do with combat marksmanship and assaulting. ONLY PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE has anything to do with assaulting. I won't even get into hey lets use delta, or rangers, or seals or what not...because there are SF teams that are T1 DA centered assets. That has little bearing on this discussion. The results came out the way they were because weapons were not correctly chosen (e-tool? pump action shotty? c'mon) and because Sonny performed very well in one test. Both used nods (gen 1) that they were not trained to use in order to make it "fair" but I mean is it really fair? I think using your own equipment would better for accuracy but hey, that's just me. So is Spetsnaz better than Green Berets? In some ways yes, and some ways no. But war gaming and actual combat are two different things.

Dr. Armand Dorian, I hope you're in the aftermath round table because I have a comment for you. Remember in the end of the last episode when you said: " I feel like the mafia paid somebody off to win because I really thought the Yakuza was going to win." Well that's how I feel about the outcome of this episode. I feel like the spetsnaz paid somebody off to win because I really thought the green berets were going to win. I feel really disappointed and ashamed that the green berets lost. Oh well, at least it was close. If you're not in the round table, I still hope you hear about or see this comment somehow.

what about the combat radio? America's special forces go to weapon of choice. nothing more devastating than calling in an air-strike or artillery. Also with the knife verses the e-tool. Troops are trained to know the weapons of their enemies so the green berets would know about the knife and should be able to try and counter it somehow, like deflect it with the e-tool.

Had to scratch my head on this one. I have worked in the Gun and Weapon buisness for 25 years. And I can tell you the Spetsnaz spring loaded knife is a snake oil sales mens PR product.

The fact is the damn thing is slow to get into action. Requires the user to hit a vital organ on the first shot. and render the person dead in 10 seconds or less. I can chop your ass to death with a E-Tool in 3 seconds. Never mind that any good soldier would have a Knife and\or Hachet as well. I know I carried 4 knifes at the min. One Gerber BMF, a TAC II, Blade Trader and a Hachet.

As for the M9 pistol its ok, but till you can replace the Colt .45 Auto with something better, its still the king. "Just no sub for cubic inches"

The deadliest weapon is a RADIO, followed by a GPS unit, a laser designator, and a pair of binoculars, controlled by a brain on a us serviceman, a map is still important, a slide rule used to be important. A lot of specials ops is getting the guy with the radio talking to the guy flying the predator, hornet, eagle etc. You can argue over grenades, but I'm bringing spare batteries.

between the two, I think Spetsnaz was was handicapped more, but still came through. I think this was a tough contest to gauge. Something that Sonny noted is that Spetsnaz was willing to die and take as many enemy as possible with them. Green B's were there to fight, kill and come back at the enemy again and again. Regardless of weapons, the mind set effects this match. i also have to say that the systema(sp) training give a tactical advantage to Spetsnaz which I don't think got brought out enough in this contest. Green B's didn' have the same training in the 80's that they have now. I think if balanced more on today's standards, Green B's edge out.

Although the russians won this time, the americans would have known that the ballistic knife was a trick, and the fact that the projectile was as accurate as it was is not entirely plausable because a person can almost never aim direclty if the weapon is down at his waist and not looking tward an opponent.

that green beret vs spetznaz was bullsh*t!!!!!!! the only thing the commies have EVER had in their favor was numbers. their weapons have always been somewhat outdated, inaccuate as hell, and technologically disadvantagous. after having worked directly with oda i know what they are capable of. AND if they initially took down the taliban after 9/11 with very little numbers and ground support, and in only a few months time, when it took the soviets many thousands of troops, tanks and air power and STILL got their asses kicked!!!!! against a 3rd world force with mostly old janky weapons, except our stingers.......i find the results absolute bullsh*t, faced off in real life the spetznaz would not survive

What the freaking crap??? An American show depicted our elite military force being insufficiant in comparison to our Russian counterparts. This is not a war that was fought centuries ago between cultures that never clashed, it is all too fresh in the American psychi and seeing an Americans as inferior to the Russians is unpatriotic.

BTW I also own several Russian Made AK74 (semi auto) and a bunch of M4's. There is no comparison in accuracy, and ergonomics. Head shots are easy with the M4 my Green Beret Nephew carries-it has an EOTECH holo site on it-and I can hit a helmet at 200M easily from a sitting or prone position. AK 74-even a red jacket custom job-nope. The selector switch on the M4 is far superior and the battle (iron sights) on the M4 are far more conducive to good accuracy. The AK 74 is better for shooting running targets though

I liked this show but there was a huge error. As Master class combat pistol shooter and the owner of several Berettas and Makarovs, NO ONE IS GOING TO RATE A MAKAROV superior to the Beretta for COMBAT use. Its smaller, shoots a less powerful round, has more recoil and holds several rounds less. Its also less accurate at extended distances. Give Robbie Leatham or Jerry Barnhart each of those guns and the clear superiority of the beretta would be evident. The Mak is more a concealed carry gun-not a real service pistol

I like that they considered most of the details. However, I think they disregarded some crucial evidence. They didn't take into consideration quantity of ammo with the hand guns. The beretta has almost twice as many rounds. When the russians are the ones that pump lead first then ask questions they still don't have as much ammo as the U.S. Also, with hand-to-hand, I feel that was a joke. If the knife is supposed to shoot the blade why not just have a second, concealed gun? The E tool had more assurance of death after the first swing, had much better reach, and served multiple tools showing U.S. ingenuity. I'm not by any means a believer that the U.S. is supreme in all, I hate the m4a1, but they missed a lot in this episode.

Just finished watching DEADLIEST WARRIOR - Green Beret vs Spetznaz and was very disappointed at the fact that they only did simulation of mid and long range weapons and saw that Spetznaz won more of the fights when clearly, Special Forces combat training in hand-to-hand would have prevailed. Green Berets, Army Rangers and Navy S.E.A.L.'s are the elite of the elite when it comes to combat experience.

The russian's training does result in a stone cold killer but that leaves them senseless and inhumane. They are like deadly animals. The americans have the superior weaponry, tactics, and intelligence. Dulled by their animalistic ways deprives the spetsnaz of the reasoning, cunning, and cleverness as well as intuition that makes humans human and therefore superior to animals. So sure a spetsnaz would likely beat a green beret in a one on one brawl without advanced tactics, but hey, so would a gorilla.

Love the show; but the Special Forces vs Spetznaz was way off. Deciding the pistol by using NVG's and giving it to the Spetznaz...crazy...they used American NVG's and the Russians didn't have any decent NVG's during the Spetznaz era. The E-tool, that's an old legend from Spetznaz days not Special Forces. Special Forces have trained more and harder than the Spetznaz ever did. The Russians never had a budget to keep up with us (I'm a Green Beret as well). Our soilders will shoot thousands of rounds during a year while they Russians may have gotten 100 rounds. Love the show but do a little more research and compare them as they were and as we are. Look at history, heart determines battles, how many Spetznaz have won their equivelant of the Medal of Honor compared to the Green Beret....NOT even close.

Okay just got done watching this episode and though I may not know much about warfare I have to disagree with the results. In the end it came down to a fight between an E-Tool and a spring-loaded knife. In my opinion you loose your blade, you loose your weapon. However, an E-Tool, did you see the damage it did! And I don't think they stressed enough the fact you can actually MISS your target with the spring loaded knife. Green Beret all the way.

Your show is horrible Spike. The tests are not scientific at all and the judges already have a bias. They even declare it at the begining of the show. You need new judges and even tests. Not one grenade in a washing machine and the other in small room. If your going to be all correct you need all the tests to be the same. Not One knife being fired at string of targets where the shovel was tested on a dummy. Test them both on the dummy. Then you will get accurate tests! On the show with the mafia you called a showed a luger on your weapon board but then they used a P38. Your idiots! Your show is horrible and I will not be watching it again. When you do decide to get it right then let the public know and then maybe I will watch it. Spike TV blows!

If you're going to do a test using squad vs squad shouldn't you allow for tatics, and not just weapons? Just a thought! Still a great show.

They never actually simulated the styles used by these warriors. When US soldiers actually form their formations for battle they are completely impenetrable... they only simulated weapons not how they think..... i'll give the edge to the US.
