Bill Murray Discusses Ghostbusters 3

The comedic giant Bill Murray is at Fantastic Fest this week, says Cinematical, and gave a tasty little dollop of gossip on all things movies -- including the movie of many rumors, Ghostbusters 3. Sounds like the old man is actually on board.

Does that mean I'm any happier about a couple of hacks from The Office penning the script? No. But it's interesting to hear Murray's insights on why Ghostbusters 2 wasn't as successful as it could have been. I've always been a big fan of the second film, though he points out the first focused on the characters and the comedy, whereas the second was all about cramming as many effects into the movie as possible.

The problem with the third won't be cramming in too many effects, it will be with having too many characters sharing screen time. At this point all the rumors have emphasized the original four Ghostbusters handing the business down to three or four new guys -- almost definitely to be hand-picked from Apatow's crew. What I still can't wrap my mind around is how Apatow and his henchmen have managed to get their hands all over this franchise. I mean, has anyone stopped to ask: What does Judd Apatow or Seth Rogen have to do with Ghostbusters? Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis's (the writers of the first two films) comedic sensibilities in no way shape or form resemble those of Apatow's.

Why aren't Aykroyd and Ramis penning the script? Are they too busy? Too many AARP meetings to chair? I mean, come on!

agreed on all counts. and yet....when seth rogen and harold ramis sit down in knocked up it makes me immeasurably happy. it's like time traveling without the expense of really good psychedelics. i would like him to be egon's bastard child. the google machine told me egon is a hungarian name, then it told me a bunch of other masculine hungarian names. i'm just throwin' it out there:

"Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis's (the writers of the first two films) comedic sensibilities in no way shape or form resemble those of Apatow's."

i don't know about that. i mean, they share the same conversant style, relatively sophisticated word play (vulgar as apatow's may seem), and... seriously, have you seen stripes recently?

(this is meant as a friendly disagreement, not a snark)

There is a 3rd Ghostbusters movie written by Ramis and Aykroyd, but it's not going to be released in theaters. It's actually a video game that is a direct sequel to the first two. I'm not sure if Bill Murray is doing Venkman's voice, but it has been confirmed that Ramis, Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson will be doing the voicework. That will be the true sequel, none of this Rogan/Apatow nonsense.

I recently watched the 1st and was very surprised at how bad it has aged...I watched Gremlins also (I was doing some reminiscing of my childhood at the time) to boot and was surprised at how much better it has aged then the 1st Ghostbusters...

This film will most likely be the same as with most "blockbusters" nowadays...more special effects than an actual story, interesting dialogue or plot...simply made to make money off the original...in other words it probably won't be worth watching.
