Jesse James is a Dead Man

Autopsy: Desert Hare Scramble

It’s called the toughest race on two wheels and the most technical motocross race in the world.

Annually, in Laughlin, Nevada (about 90 miles south and slightly east of Las Vegas), hundreds of racers gather to complete a 100 mile course that would be difficult to hike, let alone try to go it on a motorcycle. In fact, the terrain is so tough, the average speed is only about 25 mph. Some parts of the course are so treacherous, you wonder who and why anyone would do this. Once again, Jesse James would be the who. And the why? To prove to himself he can man-up against the most inhospitable and formidable territory on earth...the desert.

The first official dirt bike appeared in the 1940s as a modification to existing motorcycles. However, road racing has been reported as early as 1897 when the original “Motorcycle Scramble” came to be from British origin. Scrambles aren’t new -- they've been around for a hundred years. And riding a dirt bike is nothing new for Jesse -- but riding through thick dirt, loose rock, and erratic terrain is. And that would be normal for extreme riders. But the Laughlin Desert Hare Scramble is not your ordinary off-road race. Even experienced riders know how tough this is. Although performance motocross drivers make regular racing look easy, even they have their hands full when it comes to the Desert Hare Scramble. Many of them will not complete the grueling course, so the odds are stacked against Jesse doing it. He is up for the challenge but needs to ready himself for it.

How does one prepare for the most difficult race in all of motor sports? You go to the best in the world and take Desert Dirt Bike Racing 101. So Jesse went to see Jeremy McGrath, winner of 12 championship titles, 74 Supercross races and 103 total race titles -- a true sport champion and arguably one of the greatest off-road riders of all time. Seems reasonable Jesse will get adequate schooling, right? The problem is the course is something even Jeremy thinks is crazy. With every possible element of difficulty, and the need for strength, stamina, focus, the will to push death’s limit, and of course, skill, does Jesse have what it takes? Well four of the five he has for sure, but the skill he lacks may be his downfall and it is unlikely that a single lesson will give him what he needs.

lol...the "toughest race on two wheels and the most technical motocross race in the world" tagline has been a joke in the industry for many years...the race is slightly tough and minimally technical.

go youtube Erzberg or Last Man Standing for truly technical and tough.

Woow, i'm surprised they are airing this show... My son and son-in-law raced and finished in the top ten.. Jesse however was lapped by my SIL on the second loop, he had nothing for anyone, this was a mistake for hime to race this race.. like McGrath was going to teach this guy how to race a desert race practing on a groomed MX track.. not to mention the stupid water crossing deal that made no sense at all... Jesse needed to ride in the desert for a couple of weeks to get the feel of his bike as well the terrain... one other thing, you don't wear road racing gear to ride in the dirt.... his wife was hot though.. thats for bring here jesse!!

I ashamed that he's riding a KTM of all bikes. And I gotta ask... Why is there a 2-stroke engine sound every time they show Jesse? He's riding a 530! Christ.... What a joke.

That looks like a fast course, but no trees. I agree knobby101, a National Hare and Hound, National Enduro or maybe a GNCC(my series).

Yea i seen the show I know why your back hert you needed to stand up. That and the water scim across is not a good training idea. I do know what you do very well my dad has a monster truck (www.freedomforceracing.com) and I race motocross. You are very good at riding bikes on flat ground and on ice but with studed tires. But you need lots work if your going to try off road again. You can hang but with one finger

I enjoyed the show. Yea Jesse aint no enduro rider but he made the challange and I tip my hat to him for that. Most people aint got the ass to even atempt. I'm sure that there was more time spent training that what was shown.

I wounld not say that it was the toughest race in the states but it did look like a nice event. Yall think that desert is tough. Come try some SERA events. Add trees and lots of them!

We would love to have yall in Sept.

Hard to please crowd here, but hell for not dirt riding for 20 yrs with no real training and then running it with some injuries, its still impressive, even if it wasnt the hardest race out there. I dont see a lot of people riding when they are barley injured and any injury makes even the easiest track unbarable. Jesse's done more then a lot more people 1/2 his age have, who cant even get off there couches.

    Been there!
    Done that!

August 1987 - went down hard on my Hinda KR500R (500 cc "thumper") - and destroyed my left knee on a ride in Northern Utah. Finished the ride unable to bend my knee (another 75 miles to get back to camp)
Drove home to SoCal - still couldn't bend the knee.
September 87 - arthroscopic surgery on my left knee to removes torn ligaments - 6 weeks therapy.
    November 87 - Barstow-to-Vegas Hare & Hounds (yeah - I'm an" old guy"). Finished - placed - 7th in my class!!

JJ show tonight was an embarassment!!!

Right away, they start to insult their fan base. Let¿s ride over a water pond so that we can prepare for a desert race¿ Huh, are you kidding me?? Next, let¿s put a two stroke sound track over a KTM 530 (by the way, why a 530? What were you thinking?) and finally, let¿s insult any person that has ridden in Last Man Standing, Erzberg or even a freakn¿ GNCC by calling Laughlin the Most difficult race in the world. Please¿..

I¿ve personally Ironman¿d and finished this race and yea, it¿s not easy but it¿s not the toughest in the world. The hardest part of this race is the after party at the Losers Lounge¿ Ironman it and then try and stay awake past 8:00pm, now that¿s an accomplishment!!

What I¿m most disappointed in was listening to Jesse complain about his lower back pain as Chris Blais looks up at him from his wheel chair. Show a little respect for probably the best off road motorcycle racer of our generation. Yea Jesse, you¿ve got some lower back discomfort, let¿s keep it to ourselves.

    Too bad.

Jesse James is a Deadman, show is as phony as a three dollar bill.

Who is Jesse's double, there is no way in hell Jesse is doing all these things, you have see his face in the camera when they do a head shot.

How could Jesse get hurt in the middle of nowhere and be on his only when the camers crew and who ever else, is taping the show.

The show reminds me of Eivl Knevil, all show and no go.

    Like said before PHONY,PHONY,PHNOY.

There is no way you would show Jesse James dead.

Change the name to Jesse James Will Not Dead.

Great stunt work, you all most everyone fooled.

Jesse, stick to building bike you don't need a stuntman for that.

you now, all theese negative comments that everyone leeves about what jesse does, did or didn't do is completely dumb.I've been riding in the deseret for most of my life.I've been stuck out in the desert with a broken foot,2 messed up knees, and meesed up back before.YES!! it hurts.YES!!! i wanted to go home.but did i ....NO!!!!.I got "back on the horse" and rode the rest of the ride.Just like jeese did.was i ridin like Mcrath or anyone like that....NO!.but i still rode.I give it to jesse for riding at all since he never really has riddin and dirt bike let alone a desert race before.he did better than i thought he even would've.even with meesed up back.

Though i do gotta say....what the heck was with the water crossing thing MCrath?!?!?!?!.that was useless.Ive ridden all over the hills and trails in EL Cajon.and there are many trails that could've done the same thing that the water crossing was suppose to have accompolished.for that matter you are not that far away from like Brawley or corral canyon off road park.but NO! you had to try to make youself look like a bigman on national T.V. but instead you made yourself look like an idiot.

And to all you jesse haters out there that leave negitive comments about him and his show here.CHANGE THE CHANNEL IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT!!!!!!

Having read the above comments, many correct, one good thing is that people that have never seen a off-road desert race got to see one. Coverage has to start somewhere, maybe this will lead to more. Having been a sourthern nevada desert racer and club member, it was nice to see a desert race on TV.

I can't stand to watch your show anymore. 45 minutes into that desert ride you were already exhausted. Maybe you should get up off of your rich lazy ass and do some sit-ups or go for a jog. If you want to be a bad ass, you gotta start acting like one. What a sissy.

I can't believe all the haters. It's a friggin show! Some of it has to be overly dramatic, or else why watch it? I think Jesse should bring a couple of these internet tough guys to do a challenge against him. How about 25 laps in a indy car on a road course, or mud buggy racing down in Florida.
