4th and Long

4th and Long: You Make The Call Poll - Week 5

For the first time ever, Michael Irvin put the decision to the field and let Steve Gonzalez compete against Ahmaad Smith in a one-on-one competition to see who will move on. It was win and stay, lose and go home, and Smith came out on top. It's tough to argue with that logic, but Smith's motivation has been called into question....so now it's time for you to decide if Michael Irvin made the right choice.

first let me say that they should do that fight to stay every episode. Secondly when is montrel goin to go home he has proved over and over he has no stamina, the only thing he has goin is he looks like a football player, but moses but him on his butt. Wasingtons goin to win this shit.

Terrible, terrible, terrible outcome. First of all, Gonzalez didn't even belong in the War Room after his performance on both the run and the drill. Secondly, two of three of Smith's points came from plays that he broke up not by use of speed or agility, but by pass interference and tossing Gonzalez around once the ball was released. A potentially great WR went home tonight.

Don't wanna sound like like a whiner but there are such things as penalties in the NFL and that last play was pass interferene if I have ever seen it.. You guys need to take into consideration that on the professional field of football that the gorilla tactics are not gonna work and I think that there should be an emphasis on that aspect as well as being tough.. Gotta play smart and fair too..

speedy gonzales is the second best player on the show. he runs good routes, and has excellent hands. if u watch the replay of the final play, it was obviously interference. so in my opinion, lose the official! as far as the player's go, gamble is the bottom of the barrel. speedy should have been able to outlast gamble easily. i hope the fourth and long staff know what they are doing.

    Mike,

I Love Ya but what I saw tonight was one of the most unfair events I've ever seen in sports. I am a DB and I saw the worst & most illegal coverage used since I played sandlot. Bumping and grabbing well after 5 yds & an obvious pass interference on the last play. Speedy scored TDs during the real drill and like he said he should've never been in the room.

Everybody makes mistakes you made one tonight.

Your Still My Guy and I'll watch next week, but tonight's ending was wrong.

I think the drill where they take a pass reception then move the box forward or back was a joke. Average college receivers could win that drill. They're in the box when they take possession all they have to do was fall forward and they win!! A D-back is not going to be standing there waiting for you to take possession, he's going to be on you like white on rice. The most completely one sided drill I've sen yet. Throw it away. Whomever came up with that drill is a moron. While Joe Blow receiver is just standing waiting for the ball I'm going getting a bearing to break him in half when he takes possession. What a joke!!!! Also juking and jumping was unfair. It was supposed to be a contact drill not a wait and stand around for the db drill. LOL
    Former d-back.

it doesnt matter if its fourth and long or pros versus joes both shows suck. if spike tv had any sense at all they would put a team of football players and accept this chalange. i challange spike tv to put a football team together and play my semi pro team in a full lengh game, because from what i am seeing on tv my team is a lot better then that. if they don't accept, then i guess they are just too full of them selves and are scared of looking like losers to all who watch spike tv. do you accept this chalange??? are you man enough???

I think it was the wrong call. If they both were criticized about their performance on the YAC drill. Their fate should've been determined the same way. "Speedy" has a scoring mentality, get the TD and Smith has to have the killer instinct to stop the ball, NO MATTER WHO's CARRYING IT. If the WR, breaks away from the DB. What's he suppose to do, wait for people to get in front of him so, he can run him over? Forget that s#@&, you take it to the house. I don't know any NFL coach who would say "I'm glad that you waited for that DB to get in front of you before you made a move to the endzone." I thought that WR's had to get their spacing to catch the ball and take it to the house. Mr. Irvin was GREAT at that. YOU THE MAN MIKE!! I have my youth team watching your show to show them that, HARD WORK, PAYS OFF!!

I think that Steve Gonzalez was a better overall player than Ahmaad Smith. Smith couldn't even keep up with Gonzalez's speed or agility. If it wasn't for all the holding and pushing that Aamaad was doing to interfere with the passes I think that Gonzalez would still be there because Smith didn't break up a single pass fairly. I think that Dallas lost a awesome candidate for the wide out position tonight. Even though I'm a Saints fan I love the show and I can't wait to play Dallas this year on December 19th, 2009 in New Orleans to see how their pick fairs in the league!

They got it right, Speedy got stuck and lost, Defensive back had the advantage cause no one is calling holding, so he came up with the Lets line up and do it idea, he lost. Great heart, dumb idea cause Smith was gonna go home, he looked terrible and can not cover man to man, tight hips, slow feet.

PASS INTERFERENCE on several of the plays.... Steve won... hands down... this is competition for the NFL so should use the NFL Contact rules... NO CONTACT WHILE BALL IS IN THE AIR... If a DB Wins then does that during an NFL game they will get flagged and lose the amount of yards that was there where the contact was...

You need to bring back speedy well this was probably shot a yr ago so what difference does it make it is only someones dream. The worst part of this is the way mi coddles the db's and allows them to cheat and foul
committing penalty after penalty this was again the most unfair unrealistic drill around, you are losing out because you picked someone who is a loser to run the show!

Smith and Jones should have been cut. Heree is two guys that are at the peaks of there physical ability and they cant run 8.5 miles in less than an hour? They ran consecutive 10 minute miles they couldn't even pass the high school physical exam when I was in high school you either ran miles under 7 minutes or you failed. smit h and jones failed miserably.I got kids on my pop warnwer squad that could out run them and have more drive. So who will WIN Hawkins he consistently finishes on the top and never complains at least not on camera Go Hawk! The rest of you competitors better step it up cause he is killin you! Holley his size might  save him In my eyes there is no question since day one Hawk

yea this show is an official joke ... this is pros vs joes but they are trying to be legit... u cant be legit if ur not gunna call the game with rules.. u cant not call PA with so much on the line there... so great u kicked speedy cuz he cant catch a ball while hes being illegally covered... SURPRISE.... why dont u just line up the WRs and have them get kicked in the nuts right before they catch the ball because on your show that would be an accurate depiction of skill right? and now your left with a Db that doesnt know the rules to the game in which he is trying to play professionally
this is complete bullshit this show clearly carries no weight and is a big gay gimmick...spike congrats on your shitastic peice of NFL advertising u call 4th and long

Steve Gonzalez has been in War Room before for good reason, but tonight he should not have been in the room. Understand Yards After Contact, but the DB's need to make the contact not WR's. WR's need to make TD's and outlast the DB's. Ahmaad Smith should have went home, he was unable to handle Speedy man on man without illegal contact. I did like the competion at the end, but it also has to be fair. Speedy, sometimes less words are better and allow the coaches make the decision.

Jones should have been in the War Room instead of Speedy. Jones came in dead last on the 8 mile run. Jones was the first one out on the charity drill. And Jones got beat going head-to-head against Washington, of all people, on the Elimination Drill. Jones should have been cut.

And that last play between Smith and Speedy... should have gotten Smith cut. Who keeps a player who draws a penalty with the game on the line? That was PI, and it was obvious. Smith was getting beat by Speedy. He only really beat Speedy one time. The 2nd time he got a point, the QB under threw Speedy. Between them, Smith should have gotten cut.

But overall, Jones was the one who really should have been cut.

all the DBs do is pass interference. when are they going to start to take that into account because they can't do that in a game so why can they do it in practice. but i guess that doesn't matter cause the show has already been decided.

what the db's are doing, they are getting away with alot of bad calls! you have to think of it as the WR are getting through all the drills regardless so thats the impact they are putting on MI! I mean speedy did it to himself he's been called into the war room 3 times he was done long time ago! and i dont think anyone is favoring anyone like jones! he has more game than some, but it looks like he will get cut to!

This competition is going to come down to Holley and Hawkins. None of the db's can play in the NFL. In the end it will be Holley's YAC and downfield blocking ability vs. Hawkins flat out speed. The hit that Holley put on the db in the goal line drill made a huge impact on the coaches. He's the toughest sob out there.

I'm a female and clearly could see that this was PASS INTERFERANCE!!! The arrangements for the competition were not balanced nor fair. Just like the WR had to make a touchdown the DB should of had to make an interception to be balanced. Apparently, Ahmad thinks that holding and prematurely hitting outside the 5yard line is legal and put him at an advantage. What was the coach celebrating for? Had this been a real game the coach would have been all over him after the officials called it for was it was........PASS INTERFERANCE or ILLEGAL CONTACT. I don't think that Ahmad's heart was as committed as Gonzalez's towards football. If it was at all possible, I think the competition should be reinstitued towards the "REAL" rules of football.

Ahmaad Smith might be one of the better db's, but he shouldn't have won that challenge. It almost feels like they are caring these db's, trying to insure they have even numbers in the final episodes. With that being said, this was the best episode so far. The final players were showing heart. They took the battle field, and wanted the win. Every win was fought for.

Man shake them bustaz if u can u feel me.

NOOOO! Steve should not have got cut. There is 2 types of football players in the NFL, ones that work out, run routes, practice and play exactly like there told, and then there is those who do all that, but imperviseon the field when it matters. Steve maybe didn't do everything Mike and the coaches wanted the way they wanted, but when it mattered most, as any football player knows, on the field, he made plays. He made play after play. made people miss. He did what he had to on the field, and when he got pass interfered with on threeof his final 5 plays, he not once complained out loud about it. Sounds like a class player to me. Hey Steve, if you don't make the NFL for some reason, you can come down here to Abilene, TX and play for our Rough Riders... We have Quincy Carter!!!

Alright,Speedy is gone(then the theme from the "incredible hulk" begins to play as he walks back to get his stuff from his locker).I guess this shouldn't be a surprise to him I mean, it was the same scene when he got the call from BONJOVI when they killed ARENA FOOTBALL.

And as for Ahmaad, the ref goes to the monitor to check the plays and the call is.."PASS INTERFEARENCE, number 25 defence, 5yrd repeat down.

FYI: None of you Smith haters were there. In actuality, Smith beat Speedy 6 times in a row before Speedy even won once. F the pass interference. There was NO competition. Of course it had to be fixed up to look "competitive" on TV. Sorry folks!

Speedy deserved to go. He initiated the challenge and didn't come through. What baffles me is seeing Jones still in the show when he clearly isn't as great as Michael makes him out to be. Hawkins is the best WR and Smith is the best DB.
