The Top 10 Deaths Caused by Video Games

5. 13-Year-Old Murders Woman for Subscription Money

In 2007, A 13-year-old boy named Dinh The Dan killed an 81-year-old woman and stole her money in order to fund an online gaming addiction.  Vietnamese police report that Dan strangled the woman with a piece of rope, then buried her in a pile of sand in front of his house.  Owing to his age, he was not sent to prison, but to a reeducation camp from which he will be released after good behavior.

4. Man Kills Toddler Over Broken Xbox

Tyrone Spellman, 27, played long hours on his Xbox.  So, when his 17-month-old daughter pulled on some cords and tipped the Xbox to the ground, breaking it, he become completely enraged.  He struck her with such force that it “cracked her skull several times.”  The autopsy, too, revealed a broken arm that was at least two weeks old which social workers had failed to identify previously.

3. Daniel Petric Kills Mother Over Halo 3

After his mother and father took Halo 3 away from him, Daniel Petric, 17, unlocked the safe in which they’d hidden it. Also in the safe was a 9mm pistol. He then took the game and the pistol to his parent’s room, asked them to close their eyes because he had a surprise for them, and shot them both in the head.  The father survived with critical injuries, but his mother died instantly.

2. Toddler Beaten to Death with Game Controller

Darisabel Baez, the 2-year-old daughter to 19-year-old Neida E. Baez, was beaten to death with a video game controller by Neida’s then boyfriend, Harve L. Johnson, in April of last year. Bizarrely, the girl was brought to her mother unconscious and soaking wet because Howard had tried to revive her in the bathtub.  He refused to tell police his reason for beating the girl.

1. GTA-Inspired Cop Killing

There is little doubt that Devin Moore’s cop-killing spree and subsequent theft of a police cruiser were inspired by the ultraviolent video game series Grand Theft Auto.  Moore took one gun from an officer, shot three others with it, and fled the station in a police cruiser.  Moore was a obsessed with the GTA series of video games, and, once captured, he told police "Life's like a video game. You've got to die sometime."

The most distressing part of this post to me is that it is called a top ten list with only 5 deaths on the list. GET IT RIGHT DOUCHE!

Whoever compiled this obviously doesn't get the point that these people were ADDICTED in most cases and just like a drug/alcohol addiction, people do crazy things to make sure they can get their next fix. The other people most likely had some mental issues and didn't really think that life is a video game. As for the Halo 3 killing, that kid did NOT get that from the game, he was probably messed up from something else.

Shitlist, you're completely missing the point of what we're trying to say here. I'd definitely be just as offended if some hack wrote an article on the "top ten" deaths created by drugs (because remember now, alcohol is a drug, just like a cigarette) as I am by this article. The reason people are coming out so vehemently to decry this article is because is was linked on the main splash page of gametrailers.com.
Any piece of literature that satirizes or brings forth the opportunity for satirization the pain and suffering of those who have experienced a loss is a sad excuse for entertainment journalism.

in all these cases they must have problems of some sort or another well before they get involved in games:
e.g. number 9, the guy had a heart attack after setting a load of high scores, i'm sure had he gone to a bookies not an arcade and had he won in an equivalent manner or the horses he very probably would have had the same fate
number 4, the guy had already beaten the child two weeks previous, had the child damaged any other high-end or valuable item she would have been beaten nonetheless

i am sympathetic to the families of the deceased but there were/are problems much deeper and that take a little more thought to justify than merely blaming video games

as for GTA being "ultraviolent"; it's as violent as the player chooses, there is nothing encouraging you to kill outside the missions, and in the most recent game there were times when you could choose not to kill the person

I'm sorry to say that I find this article (or at least the title) to be repulsive. Death is no little matter that I do not think can be glorified as "top ten" and made as an entertaining subject like the rest of gaming top ten list. Please respond to the writer of this article and tell him to put this down or at least present it a different way. We may not know how it feel to be effect by these event but we should be sympathetic to the people who experienced them by not being brought up as entertainment news and "top ten".

First of all, shitlist your fucking retarded. If you would have tead the replies thoroughly it explains of how people are responsible for their own actions. You can't compare video games to any other kind of addiction. Simply, because they don't alter your mind and force you to do these things. If a mentally ill person is doing something that is any where close to addictive they may put themselves into that persona and act on it. But, its like it has been explained time after time. Read my last comment and tell me i did not say thoroughly the intelligent parts of your reply. For you to say the replies are just as shitty as the article and then later say "I can't jude" u contradict yourself by judging the article and the replies as "shitty".

Next time, you decide you think you're smart and want to put a reply down based on your bias, don't jumble it into a pile of shit and think your a genius.

Sorry but I think the title is a bit sensational. Many of those deaths, weren´t caused by video games, they just happen to be involved in the story.
    Besides that, good list!

The replies are just a shitty as the article. People fail to realize that video games like any addiction is going to mess you up.

Might as well have a list The Top 10 Deaths Caused by Alcohol or Drugs. Does that make it better for people? Is it easier to understand that way?

Video game addiction is real. People don't understand enough of it yet, but it is and will be a problem. Kids and adults want to play games, awesome. Play to the point of screwing up things in real life, not awesome. I can't judge, I wish other people wouldn't. Lastly, you don't need to validate that you're hardcore gamer and look at me, I never hurt anyone.

These people weren't likely to be absolute angels before playing these games

I play condemned, Gta, manhunt and the like and i never get these thoughts

I could beat someone to death while cooking

If i get frustrated by a game, i quit playing, change game, or take a cold shower.
Only you, are responsible for your own actions.
Though sometimes, society fails take action, even after obvious "red lights".
    DON'T BLAME THE GAMES.
    Games/Music/Movies/Whatever don't kill people.
    People kill people.
I don't even know what to say, this shit's so fucked up.

It makes it look although that these people who died is a good thing and is some sort of joke and most of them being young people too. Who ever made this should be fired and be ashamed of what they have written here. It's disgraceful.

For some reason the Daniel Petric shooting seems like the only one to me that may have been due to what we all know as gamers rage. However, this in a different case would be applying that to reality, when we know it's sayed for only when your playing. It seems to me the parenting in his life was just fine but he spent too many long hours alone without outside contact and may have developed a mental illness. This one is the most disturbing, anyone who can murder their parents in cold blood do not deserve to receive the death penalty but to rot in a jail cell for life. I agree with all of the posts that this is discredits those peoples names, obviously the writer has had some poor upbringing. There is in no way that the game itself causes any of the actions a person comitts, it's like we're told in school kids your responsible for your own decisions.

i been a videogame fan for almost 20 years when i finaly got married in june of 2007 we started living together, the first 6 months were great but after that i started doing wat a single gamer does play as much as you can in your free time,me and my wife started having fights i started to have anger problems and i started hating going anywhere speacially her moms house.so she left in august of 08 she was gonne for a hole month we got the chance to work things out and i realized that i need to balance my real life from my gaming life.i introduced her to videogames and now she has her favorite list cod4,ff12,guitar hero,fable2,little big planet.see you have to balance your life speacily for people that are married and have children because even if it hurts me to write it videogames can become a problem in real life.

gametrailers take this topten out make gamers feel like shit this website is for gamers not aginst them!i love this website but if wake up in the mornig to this wich made my day complet shit than i say im out see you in ign.com.

I'm an avid gamer myself but NEVER in my entire life would I ever feel stressed from a video game or have the urge to do things these games do. My bet as to why these people committed these acts was probably because due to poor upbringing or communication from the parents. It's important that parents tell their kids in their early age to not take games so seriously and should encourage them to take sports during their spare time.

Really!! They made a list of the top ten deaths of video games. Title does look like it's supposed to be like a entertaining thing, when it shouldn't. They should've called it like their show on Spike 1000 Ways to Die. Don't make it look like a popularity contest. Plus if you hate a moment in a game do what i do take it out on the game or play another one don't take it out on society as a whole. (I agree with everyone just wanted to give a bash to this nonsense)

I mean seriouly, stabing someone for a swordin a game? WTF you know that guy was bat shit crazy before he started playing games. he was probebly the nerd that got laughed at in school and the guy who never got the girls.

So it appears to me that, it's not video games that's causing the deaths of these individuals, it's mental disorders and heart problems. I'm not into mainstream pop culture but if I didn't know any better I'd say this is a witch hunt against the video gaming industry. If the young man who was playing arcade games would have died from a heart attack from playing too much basket ball would we have an article about basketball related deaths? No, we wouldn't.

I think this article is in pretty poor taste. Presenting it as a classic Top 10 list is disrespectful and trivializing the deaths of those people. Simply implying that there is an order from "least spectacular" to "best" (or whatever the reasoning behind the way you choose #1 was), makes me shake my head.

I know video game coverage usually doesn't deal with severe topics like murder, but you chose to do so. Honestly, you should think about rewriting this article and giving it the proper gravity that is needed here.

You're making entertainment out of the killings of innocent people, several of them children. Write a top ten about the worst video games ever made (overdone) or the biggest controversies to come out of the games industry (also overdone, maybe top ten lists are overdone?).

Things like this make bad publicity for video games, the acts of violence noted on this countdown isnt the result of videogames, the inability to differentiate from right of wrong is the real reazon, many people are just plain ill, they need help, and other people just jump to the conclusion that any problem they had is because of the videogames, ive been playing games since i was a kid and i have NEVER even contemplate any thoughts of doing something like the people on this list.

I don't really like the idea of a 'Top Ten' list of video game deaths. It devalues the lives of those who died and insinuates that this is some kind of thing to celebrate. It also lends credence to arguments that games lead to this kind of violence. I do think that there could be some influence, but this article is very morbid and sadistic.
