The Hobbit Could Go 3D

Every fan of The Hobbit who loved Avatar might soon have a reason to rejoice. It's looking like Guillermo del Toro might make The Hobbit in 3D.

He's been discussing it with Peter Jackson, but at this point it's anyone's guess as to whether we're going to be watching Bilbo Baggins in more than two dimensions. Del Toro wrote this recently with regard to whether The Hobbit would go 3D:

I wouldn't read much on it just yet, but now, after all this time, after AVATAR doing the Box Office it did, we have had enquires from above about The Hobbit being in 3D.

No impositions or heavy leaning. Just enquires. Just fulfilling my promise to let you all know if discussions ever started.

Cheers

Hopefully del Toro and Jackson make their decision based on whether making The Hobbit in 3D is a good idea, not based on whether they can charge more money for tickets at the box office.

It seems like movies being converted to 3D after the fact and movies getting shot in 3D is going to be the norm until movies made in 3D start flopping and costing studios lots of money. Studios seem to not realize that Avatar was wildly successful because 3D was an integrated element of the film: it wasn't a novelty thrown in just for the hell of it, but part of the entire concept.
