Half of America Consumes Sugar-Filled Drinks Daily

Americans sure do love their daily fix of sugar. More than 50 percent of the U.S. population over age two consumes soda or other sugar-filled drinks daily, according to a new report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics. The report found that a quarter of Americans consume more than 200 calories a day of sugar-filled drinks. This is greater than the calories found in one can of soda. Male teens guzzled the most, consuming 252 – 273 calories a day from various sugary drinks. Older women drink the least, consuming only 42 calories a day. The report did not include diet drinks, 100% fruit juices, sweetened teas, and flavored milk. Unsurprisingly the report linked this daily sugar intake to “poor diet quality, weight gain, obesity, and in adults, type 2 diabetes.” It might be time to switch to diet, guys. [CNN]
