Alves Out, Saunders Steps Up

March 26, 2010

Fans got a curveball just days before UFC 111 when it was announced that Thiago Alves had to pull out of his fight with Jon Fitch for medical reasons.

Fortunately, Ben Saunders, who was slated to battle Jake Ellenberger, asked UFC president Dana White to step into Alves' place. Fitch agreed to the fight and the match was made. MMAjunkie.com reports that Ellenberger picked up his show and won money though, so don't cry for him.

The weigh-ins for UFC 111 went as expected. Dan Hardy wore some spooky red contact lenses and Nate Diaz had his best mean mug on. But fans in attendance were excited to see a familiar face (and other parts) in Rachelle Leah, who is making a special one-time-only return as an Octagon Girl Saturday night.

We're not anticipating any more issues in Newark. Everyone scheduled to go Saturday night has been cleared medically and made weight. So be sure to order the show and check out the free preliminary fights, 9 on the east coast, 6 on the west, live on SPIKE!
