"Being John Malkovich" Writer Rolls Out New Movie
Charlie Kaufman, the genius screenwriter behind Being John Malkovich, Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind has a new movie out -- and this time he's directing, too. Synecdoche, New York is his directorial debut, and it looks like this movie will be no less mind-bendingly funny than his others.
It might help to actually know what synecdoche means, according to Wiktionary (before today, I didn't): A metaphor by which an inclusive term stands for something included, or vice versa; a metaphor in which a part is spoken of as the whole (hand for laborer) or vice-versa (the court for the judge).

Theater director Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is mounting a new play. Fresh off of a successful production of Death of a Salesman, he has traded in the suburban blue-hairs and regional theater of Schenectady for the cultured audiences and bright footlights of Broadway. Armed with a MacArthur grant and determined to create a piece of brutal realism and honesty, something into which he can put his whole self, he gathers an ensemble cast into a warehouse in Manhattan's theater district. He directs them in a celebration of the mundane, instructing each to live out their constructed lives in a small mockup of the city outside.
