Fans of Zombieland will be thrilled to find out that there is, in fact, a sequel on the way. And, even better, it's looking like this thing is going to be in 3D. That really has been the main thing lacking in all of these zombie movies, that extra dimension. Now it looks like we're finally going to get it.
Moviehole reports that the director of Zombieland, Ruben Fleischer, has confirmed the news:
Sony are very interested in a Zombieland sequel. And he’s [Fleischer] ready to go. The original cast – Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin – are also ready to slap another coffin dodger with the, er, "rule" book. In other words, unless the events of 2012 come true... we'll be seeing a sequel in a couple of years. But the most interesting development? Fleischer says the next film will likely be 3D - yep, mother-hopping three-dimensional Woody vs. Zombie action!!
It seems that the coming release of Avatar has encouraged Fleischer to stretch his wings in 3D. It's interesting to see how and if Avatar is going to affect the way other directors approach their craft from here on out. If Avatar bombs, will 3D be shunned? If it blows up at the box office will everyone start shooting in 3D? Theaters better start getting equipped for the increase in demand in the event the first option comes true.
As for when the sequel to Zombieland is going to start shooting, Fleischer says only that it'll go into production when "we crack it" -- it being the story, script, etc. Don't hold your breath, in other words. The man's in demand and is likely going to shoot a rom-com before he even starts thinking about jumping back into the world of the undead again.
But when he does, it's going to be better than ever.
