Director Terry Gilliam’s newest movie – and Heath Ledger’s final – The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, has finally found a studio willing to distribute it. Though the transaction isn’t final, it looks like Sony Pictures Classics is ready to seal the deal.
After Ledger’s death in the middle of production, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell stepped up to help complete the film in January of 2008. They appear in fantasy sequences that Ledger was scripted to be in.
It’s good to see that Ledger’s last film will get a proper theatrical release, even if it turns out to be a small one. There would be something unjust about an actor with such large talents to be relegated to a straight-to-DVD release.
Here’s hoping Parnassus does service both to Gilliam’s vision and Ledger’s legacy.
