Sacha Baron Cohen to Play Queen's Freddie Mercury

September 17, 2010

It’s finally been confirmed that Sacha Baron Cohen will play iconic Queen singer Freddie Mercury in an upcoming feature. Hell. Yes.

GK Films has confirmed that Cohen will star in the role and screenwriter Peter Morgan (The Queen and The Last King of Scotland) will be taking on the script duties for the film. GK Films' Graham King said in a statement, “Queen is one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and a music brand all unto itself. Freddie Mercury was an awe-inspiring performer, so with Sacha in the starring role coupled with Peter’s screenplay and the support of Queen, we have the perfect combination to tell the real story behind their success.”

Deadline is reporting that Queen’s music rights have already been acquired for the unnamed feature. There’s hasn’t been any word on whether Mercury's vocals will be used or if Cohen will be belting out the classics himself. Freddie Mercury died in 1991 from AIDS-related complications.
