Chess just got a whole sexier after a model and Russian Grandmaster won the Women’s World Chess Championship last week in Russia. Alexandra Kosteniuk, a 23-year old-beauty, has been playing chess since birth and became a Grandmaster at age 14. The self described "Chess Queen" believes that “beauty and intelligence can go together” and has walked the catwalk, posed for semi naked pictures, made an exercise video and appeared in Russian films. Alexandra beat Chinese chess prodigy Hou Yifan in the finals to take home the crown. Many critics have criticized her for modeling, saying it “distracts from the intellectual importance of chess”. Alexandra and her fans think differently. She says: "modelling is not a job. It is just a hobby, like reading books. I want people to see there is a fun side to chess. It can be made as exciting as soccer or tennis. Things are changing. I am clever, so I can play chess; and I am not so ugly, so I can model." Her fans think her greatest accomplishment so far has been making chess sexy, cool and more accepted.
