Will There Be a Fourth Pirates of the Caribbean?

bynathanbloch   September 21, 2009 at 6:04PM  |  Views:  |  Comment

Now that the chairman of Disney, Dick Cook, has gotten the boot from CEO Bob Iger (or chosen to leave on his own -- whichever you believe), Johnny Depp has gotten vocal with his displeasure. He's even gone so far as to say he might not be down with doing a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie. This is bad news...right?

Depp has gone on record with his disapproval of Cook leaving (or getting fired from) Disney, saying,

He is the utmost gentleman, so he made the call himself. He said, 'I'd like you to hear it from me before you hear it from someone else or read it. He said today was my last day. He didn't give me a reason... I didn't see this coming. There was no reason to see this coming. I consider Dick a friend inside an insane system. He's instantly trustworthy. And you generally don't meet people at the studios you trust.

As for whether or not Depp is down for a fourth Pirates, that's another matter entirely. Officially he signed on a while back for another sequel, but now that Cook is out of the picture it's a whole new ball game. At this point things depend on whether Depp is happy with the new script. Depp said, "There's a fissure, a crack in my enthusiasm at the moment."

The question being, Just how big is that fissure? Big enough to turn down a huge pay day? One way or another Disney's loss of Cook could cost the studio a whole lot of money.

How do you feel about the possibility of the fourth Pirates dropping off Disney's slate? Would this be good news or bad? Some say the third film marked one film too many in the franchise. If that's the case then Depp dropping out of it altogether might actually make some fans happy.
