Sean Penn Back Onboard the Stooges Movie

January 5, 2010

Sean Penn took a Hollywood retirement last summer, but all things must end. Now that he's back from getting divorced from Robin Wright Penn, that clears up his non-retired schedule to jump back on board the Farrelly Brothers' Three Stooges movie.

If this new Three Stooges actually gets made, Penn would play Larry:

Penn took a Tinseltown time-out back in June when he announced he was forgoing future film projects to focus on his family as his marriage to Robin Wright Penn went down the tubes. Penn’s move sank the Farrelly Brothers’ hopes to get the long-awaited Stooges flick off the ground in 2009.

“We got him back,” Bobby Farrelly told the Track. “He always said he wanted to do it after, you know, taking care of his family.”

Nothing helps heal the wounds of a divorce better than acting in a comedic film about the Three Stooges. It's pretty hard to imagine much hilarity coming out of a Penn performance, but then again, this is the guy who can pretty much do anything he puts his acting chops to. This should be child's play for the actor.

It sounds like the Farrelly Brothers used their time away from the Stooges project productively. They've got a comedy in the works starring Owen Wilson called Hall Pass. It centers on a man who's been given permission by his wife to cruise for other women for a week.

Benicio Del Toro is still attached to play Moe but, despite the rumors, Jim Carrey has nothing to do with the part of Curly. Curly remains uncast.

Sounds like we're going to be getting a lot of comedic films sometime soon from the Farrelly Brothers. And, oddly enough, Sean Penn wants to be a part of it.
