Putting an End to the Madness (of March)

April 2, 2010

We're almost at the end of the springtime basketball bonanza known as March Madness, and unless you have some sort of time-traveling DeLorean, the odds are high that your bracket has been busted for quite some time. The teams you picked are almost definitely back at school studying for finals (yeah, right).

So now you're free to enter into the final weekend of the tournament with nothing more than a fan's rooting interest. The question is, which team should you root for? Well, some of the folks here at Spike Brand Creative got together to provide a handy guide to help you in your quest to jump on the appropriate bandwagon.

Butler: If you still get choked up at the end of Hoosiers, the Bulldogs are the obvious choice for you. Not only are they from Indiana and have a team full of actual Hoosiers, but they literally filmed Hoosiers in their gym. It's more inspiring than a Gene Hackman motivational speech.

Michigan State:
If you support the UAW, but don't actually want to buy an American car, maybe you should make yourself feel less guilty by rooting for Michigan State. At the very least, you can help put a smile on the faces of East Lansing-ites. Not that they need your help...The Spartans, no stranger to the Final Four, have made it six of the last twelve years.

West Virginia:
If you love "Take me home, Country Roads," think the other teams in the Big East have a snooty superiority complex, and still think Pittsnoggle is one of the best last names ever, then pull for the Mountaineers. If you still need another reason, how about De'Sean Butler preternatural ability to hit buzzer beaters? This season, he's got six.

Rooting for the Blue Devils is a lot like being a Yankee fan. But it's a lot easier to take the pain of people giving you a hard time for your team allegiance when you're basking in the glow of a championship. Haters gonna hate, but Coach K has been to the Final Four about a bazillion times (actually, eleven) so he's obviously doing something right.

So now you have an idea of which team to pretend you've been rooting for all along. As soon as you figure out a way to not tear up during the "One Shining Moment" montage, you'll be all set.

In the meantime, post your own Final Four thoughts- anything from your opinion on the best ballers to the cheerleaders that fill you with the most, um, spirit.
