Top Prospect Baffles Sports World With Selfless Decision to Become a Priest

January 22, 2010

The 2009 Fall League MVP and Oakland Athletics top prospect Grant Desme has decided to give up a lucrative career in baseball in order to join the ministry and serve God. (Or the St. Katherine’s Church did a very nice job recruiting a ringer for next month’s rivalry game with Temple Beth Israel.)

The 23-year-old was a second-round selection in the 2007 draft after being named Big West Player of the Year at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and was regarded as one of the brightest stars in the A’s farm system.

"We respect Grant's decision and wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors," A's general manager Billy Beane said in a statement.

Even though I lost a five dollar bet with the homeless guy who pees on the side of my car every morning about the positive influences in the world of sports, it makes me smile when nice stories like this come across my desk.

Best of luck, Grant.
