The Top 10 Viral Videos of 2010

5. Trololololo Guy

Unearthed from an old TV broadcast from 1966, this video of singer Eduard Khil has permamently cemented his place in pop culture not as a beloved baritone as he is known in his native Russia, but as the "Trololo Guy." Really, there isn't much you can say about the weirdness of the video unless you watch it.

What's perhaps most interesting about the video is that it's not even all that unique. The Trololo singing style is known in Russia as "vokaliz," which is a singing style not dissimilar to jazz scatting. Believe it or not, the version by Khil wasn't even the first. So I guess this means there's all sorts of Russian weirdness we have to dig up now.

4. Old Spice Guy

You've got to hand it to Old Spice. Not only did they make a fancy Super Bowl commercial that's genuinely clever, they also defied all the conventional wisdom and decided not to air it during the Super Bowl. So what did they do instead? They just posted it on YouTube.

Nine months later, the video has garnered over 25 million views and landed its star, former football pro Isaiah Mustafa, a talent deal with NBC. The weirdest part? Now he's dating Neve Campbell. Talk about spicing up your life.

3. Epic Beard Man

What do you get when a racially charged fight breaks out on an Oakland city bus between an over-the-hill Vietnam vet and a younger passenger who's been talking smack about how he's gonna kick some ass? You get viral video gold, that's what.

It's pretty hard to fully explain all the dynamics in this video. For one, it's not wholly clear whether Thomas Bruso, now eternally known as Epic Beard Man, was knowingly making a racist comment with his comment about getting his "shoes shined" but it's pretty undeniable that he was, at the very least, itching for a fight. So after this video surfaced, the Internet went completely nuts for a couple of days. Numerous parodies were spawned, with commenters left and right holding up Epic Beard Man as some sort of weird (if vaguely racist) urban avenger. Kind of like Bernard Goetz but with better facial hair.

2. Double Rainbow

The natural splendor of Yosemite is known the world over by nature lovers. From its granite cliffs to its verdant meadows, the World Heritage Site is beloved year-round as one of the most beautiful places in the entire United States. So when Paul "Bear" Vasquez came across not one, but TWO rainbows above the park simultaneously, his response was in and of itself something to behold.

As of this writing, the video has received over 20 million views on YouTube. The video was so popular that Microsoft actually enlisted Vasquez to appear in one of its commericals for Windows Live Photo Gallery. What does this mean? I have no idea, but it's full on, man. Full. On.

1. Bed Intruder

When Antoine Dodson's sister was the victim of an attempted rape in their Huntsville, Alabama home, he did what many people would do. He got angry. Very angry. In fact, once the clip of his impassioned response to a news reporters' questions was posted on YouTube, it quickly became a hit, eventually reaching over 23 million views.

But that was just the beginning. Just two days later, the original video was remixed by the one and only Gregory Brothers, best known for their Auto-Tune the News series on YouTube. The resulting video, seen below, has garnered over 50 million views in the past few months and was cited by YouTube as the most popular video of 2010.

But that wasn't the end of it. Not by a long shot. Like a true virus, the meme spread to the furthest reaches of the Internet, culminating in a live performance during this year's BET Awards. With over 100,000 copies of the "Bed Intruder Song" sold on iTunes, Dodson actually made enough money to move his family into a new house, completely out of the projects. So the story of a woman who suffered an attemped sexual assault actually has a happy ending, except for one tiny detail. The police never actually caught the rapist.

Assuming that Antoine is still on the hunt, it's probably only a matter of time before the culprit meets his justice. I don't know about you, but I'm really looking forward to the video for that one.
