The UFC has officially announced a rematch between heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and interim heavyweight champion Frank Mir will take place at UFC 98 on May 23rd, finally naming an undisputed heavyweight champion.
"Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir put on one of the most intense one round fights I've ever seen at UFC 81," said UFC President Dana White in a press release sent out Monday night.
Both fighters have come a long way since their first fight just over a year ago, and this rematch is shaping up to be one of the true epics. Frank Mir burst onto the MMA scene when he made his UFC debut in 2001, and he earned his first championship with a submission victory over Tim Silvia in ‘04. Shortly after that, his career was derailed by a terrible motorcycle accident. His road to recovery was long and bumpy, but in his last outing - a TKO of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira - he looked as sharp as he ever has.
In Lesnar's last bout, where he defeated UFC legend Randy Couture, he showed extreme growth, demonstrating restraint and tact. It's a scary thought that the beast is learning the finer points of MMA.
Now the two are set to meet in the prime of their careers and finally settle a long period of unrest in the UFC's heavyweight division.
