When Rob Lowe’s sex tape leaked in 1989 it nearly ended his career. The former teen heartthrob was filmed getting intimate with a girl who later turned out to be a minor. For Lowe, this was a major wake-up call and a turning point in his life and career.
Lowe appeared on yesterday’s episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show to promote his new autobiography. On the show he admitted the sex tape and ensuing controversy saved his life. He told Oprah, “It ends up being the greatest thing that ever happened to me. Because what it ends up doing is accelerating sort of my alcohol stuff to where I finally get sober and have been able to have the rest of my life that I'm so blessed with, which is now 20 years of sobriety. I don't think any of it happens without [the video].”
In a dig at celebrities who now purposely leak so-called private sex tapes for profit, Lowe told Oprah, “Now people do sex tapes to help their careers. You make the tape, you give it to him [a well-known celebrity lawyer] and then you are shocked, shocked I tell you, that it is out. You are outraged and you are going to call a lawyer. And then the lawyer sells it and you get paid.” This sounds all too familiar.
