After much speculation that Jackie Earle Haley was going to play Sinestro in director Martin Campbell's Green Lantern, these rumors have been tossed aside for new rumors. But these new rumors are straight from the horse's mouth, so they might just have a little more validity to them.
Campbell recently spoke with MTV News and dismissed the rumors that Haley was going to play Sinestro, and said that Mark Strong -- who played Lord Blackwood in Sherlock Holmes -- was, in fact, his first choice. Speaking about the Haley rumors to play Sinestro, Campbell said, "No, that's completely wrong."
In fact, we're in negotiations with Mark Strong to play Sinestro. ...He's not only a wonderful actor, but he looks like Sinestro. If you look up old pictures of Sinestro, he's very like him. The Jackie Earle Haley thing, somebody told me about it this morning; I had never heard it before in my life.
It's hard to get news more solid than that. If the director says he has his eye on Strong then he's probably not blowing hot air up our you-know-what.
Truth be told, Strong is in many ways a more versatile actor than Haley, though both would be intriguing as Sinestro. In short, Campbell can't really go wrong with either, though I think Strong would be the more exciting choice.
Haley is going to have his fair share of comic book roles coming his way and doesn't really need to sweat this one. But who would you rather see play Sinestro? Mark Strong or Jackie Earle Haley?
