Is a Robocop Remake Still a Reality?

July 15, 2009

There hasn't been much news about the once vaunted Robocop remake that Darren Aronofsky was supposed to helm. Perhaps it's because The Wrestler director has other tricks up his sleeve that he's more interested in.

The Risky Business Blog states that Aronofsky has become sidetracked with what will likely be his next film, Black Swan, to star Natalie Portman. Officially Aronofsky is still the man for the job, though MGM is, in fact, casting about for new directorial talent to take the reins of Robocop:

Aronfosky and writer David Self have been working closely to hone ideas on the action reboot. Though it would be a tight fit, MGM could essentially hit the pause button until early-mid 2010, when Aronofsky is finished with Swan, and still make its 2011 release-date target. But insiders in the rep community say the studio has also quietly put out feelers for other directors who could come on to Robocop in case the timing doesn't work out.

It's all about priorities, Darren. Girly movie with Natalie, or one of the awesomest action movies to come out of the '80s? I mean, come on. It's not even debatable.

That said, there are probably a lot of fans out there who aren't eager to see the '87 film desecrated by a remake. What are your thoughts?
