Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy to Star in New Mad Max Movie

Though nothing is official yet, it's being reported that Mad Max 4 has found its two lead stars: Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy. Hardy recently starred in the indie Bronson about British prison inmate Charles Bronson and Theron...well, we she needs no introduction.

E! Online tells us this about the news:

When he announced that he would begin work on the sequel back in 2007, [Geroge] Miller admitted Gibson was too old for the antihero role of "Mad" Max Rockatansky, and said, "I don't think he would be interested in being involved at all."

Instead, Miller is looking at little-known Brit Tom Hardy, whose credits include Black Hawk Down and Band of Brothers, to play opposite Theron.

Hardy recently appeared in RocknRolla and a television version of Wuthering Heights, and you might remember him as Praetor Shinzon in the Star Trek movie from 2002, Nemesis.

Hardy is an exciting choice to replace Mel Gibson. Gibson is too old to play Max at this point, and from all accounts he's not interested anyway. He's too busy getting busy with beavers.

As for Theron, after her underwhelming appearances in both Aeon Flux and Hancock it's difficult to get excited about her taking over a classic sci-fi action franchise. Maybe she'll turn it around with Mad Max, but this blogger isn't hopeful.
