When it comes to Edward Norton's role within the Marvel universe -- playing the Hulk -- he's proven to be a less than enthusiastic fanboy. There was the whole refusing to do publicity for The Incredible Hulk spat, and he's been very noncommittal about whether or not he's going to return to the role. He's finally given an interview to let us hear some news from the horse's mouth.
At this point Norton is passing off his ambivalence to commit to the role as a time issue -- in his words, it's all "a function of time," which gives me nasty flashbacks to math tests I was never quite prepared for. So what does this mean for the Hulk franchise, or The Avengers? Well...it's kinda hard to say because, predictably, Norton really didn't say much at all:
I get very busy. You have to deal with the demands of your moment. I tend to keep my head in the thing I'm doing and I don't speculate or worry too much about what two or three blocks down the thing is going to be. I know all these things will reveal themselves and work themselves out or not.
Forgive this blogger for suspecting this might not work itself out. Despite the fact that Norton expressed admiration for Marvel and the movies it's been making, he in no way whatsoever reassures us of his continued involvement with it.
There's really no reason to get concerned that he's going to abandon his role as Bruce Banner until the next film is in the works. Once a director is announced and a script is ready to go, that's when we're going to need to hear something from Norton one way or another. And that's probably when we will -- but no sooner.
