How Bad Is Your Download Speed?

byTheta1138   July 28, 2011 at 4:30PM  |  Views:  |  Comment

We've all had it happen: we're downloading something, or possibly engaged in a serious, intelligent debate with random strangers that in no way involves squad-based combat or missile launchers, when our Internet connection suddenly slows to a crawl. Fortunately, somebody's done the research to figure out exactly which states have the worst speed.

Brace for a shocker here: more rural states have slower download speeds. In fact, the state with the absolute worst speeds was Idaho, which means there aren't too many happy gamers in the Gem State. Wait, "the Gem State"? Aren't they required by law to have some sort of joke about potatoes in their state name?

So, who gets the best speed? Not who you'd think, surprisingly. The best four states for lightning fast downloads are...Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Maryland. California actually has fairly terrible speed, considering all its cities, and New York state, while faster, is fairly pokey too when it comes to the Internet.

Why is this? They're all relatively small states that have a lot of development, so they have better communications networks than, say, Iowa, which is made entirely of corn. See, good things happen when you're well-developed!
