Google Earth's New 3D NYC Maps Are Mind-Blowing

April 16, 2010

Google Earth started out as a simple mapping program, generally used for the novelty of being able to get a look at anything from Stonehenge to the 7-11 down the street. But with their new 3D street views of New York City, Google Earth is going from a mapping program to a world simulator.

At this point, NYC is the only urban area that's rendered at this level of detail, but knowing how Google does things, it's probably only a matter of time until you'll be able to virtually cruise through your neighbor's backyard. But whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is still up for debate.
