After being hospitalized since February, Hollywood icon Elizabeth Taylor passed away earlier today of congestive heart failure at the age of 79.

As one of the most legendary actresses the movie biz has ever had, Elizabeth Taylor starred in an endless number of screen classics in the 1950s and ‘60s, including Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and National Velvet . Her life-long friendship with Michael Jackson was also a hot topic. In the wake of the 1985 death of her very good friend and fellow actor Rock Hudson, Taylor went on to become a leading advocate for victims of AIDS by helping to raise millions for research and treatment of the disease.

According to reports, Taylor passed away early this morning surrounded by her four children at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center here in Los Angeles. May she rest in peace. Photo: MGM Studios/Getty Images
