The first picture of Russell Crowe as Robin Hood in director Ridley Scott's new production of the classic tale has arrived. He's slimmed down and toned up after his portly shagginess in State of Play and Body of Lies. Stalking through the forest, longbow in hand, Crowe looks very much the medieval Brit with a grudge. Check out the full photo after the jump.
Producer Brian Grazer has this to say about Crowe's appearance in the film:
He doesn't have the old Robin Hood tights. He's got armor. He's very medieval. He looks, if anything, more like he did in Gladiator than anything we're used to seeing with Robin Hood.
In terms of the film's relevance to contemporary audiences, he goes on:
Oddly, it's a metaphor for today. He's trying to create equality in a world where there are a lot of injustices. He's a crusader for the people, trying to reclaim some of the ill-gotten gains of the wealthy. That's a universal theme.
Well, all political relevance aside, as long as he takes down an army or two of Anglo-Saxons, it's all good. That longbow he's wielding looks like it would be a painful way to get taken down.
Now if only we could get our hands on some pics of Maid Marion...
