Total Recall Gets Remade

February 26, 2009

The latest news just in regarding Movies That Absolutely Do Not Need to Be Remade is that Total Recall is also getting the ol' reboot, remake -- whatever you want to call it. Director Paul Verhoeven's 1990 sci-fi masterpiece featured Arnold Schwarzenegger as a man who goes on a mental vacation and spends some time tripping out on Mars, meeting all manner of freaky mutants. So why is it the people over at Columbia thinks this needs redoing?

The project is the baby of producer Neil H. Moritz, though at this point there isn't a director, writer or star attached. It's going to be interesting to watch as Moritz and Co. try to find someone to fill Schwarzenegger's shoes, as they are very big shoes to fill.

It's also going to be interesting to see if Total Recall version 2.0 attracts as large an audience as the first. Hell, maybe they'll just wait till Arnold's time as governor is up and just use him again as a slightly older, wiser version of himself. Doubtful, but you never know.

In the meantime, this can't help but make you wonder: what other masterpieces from the '90s are going to get exhumed from their place in pop culture and remade?
