American Soccer is a Bit of a Drama Queen

The U.S. soccer team needed a victory over the dreaded (but not terribly talented) Algerian side in order to avoid being eliminated from the World Cup this morning. Naturally - in order to build an appropriate level of suspense - they waited until just three minutes remained in the game before taking the lead. (Amazing video after the jump.)

After a disappointing 90 minutes that saw the Americans locked in a scoreless tie with Algeria, the team appeared to be headed for its second consecutive early exit. Despite dominating in the offensive end, the red, white and blue were unable to convert a single goal.

That is, of course, until Landon Donovan decided today was an excellent time to become a hero. The team's most decorated player did the impossible during extra time and lifted an entire nation with just one shot.
