Scarlett Johansson to be Black Widow

by nathanbloch   March 12, 2009 at 1:46PM  |  Views: 246

It's official, Scarlett Johansson is going to play Black Widow in Iron Man 2.  But does Scarlett have what it takes to play the character?

For a while Emily Blunt was lined up to play Black Widow, but that fell through when her obligation to Fox to be in Gulliver's Travels locked her up.

However, a lot of fanboys feel that Johansson doesn't physically resemble Black Widow, and a lot of other critics are taking issue with the fact that her acting chops aren't up to snuff. It's hard to argue with any of these critiques, but we'll just have to wait and see what happens. Mickey Rourke has signed on and off of this project more times than he's had plastic surgery, so what the future holds for Iron Man 2 is anyone's guess.

Also, following up on recent news that Rourke has, in fact, finally signed onto Iron Man 2 for good, Variety gives us a few more details about his role:

Rourke also met with Jon Favreau and scribe Justin Theroux and got to be part of the development of his character. He'll play Whiplash, a character that includes elements from that comicbook villain and Crimson Dynamo, another Russian baddie.

Seems Rourke made a really good impression on Robert Downey, Jr. when they bumped into each other at the Oscars. Who says Mickey is difficult to get along with? His charm is certainly working overtime these days.
