UFC (Unofficial) Rankings #2

Ultimate Fighting Championship (Unofficial) Rankings
October, 28, 2009

Because the UFC does not publish official fighter rankings I am going to release periodic top 5 rankings in each weight class based on where I think the fighters stand in the rankings. These rankings aren't based on who I like or think is the best fighter, but who is closest to the top of each division.

The fallout from last Saturday's UFC 104 is having some interesting effects on the rankings, while the ever-changing fight card for UFC 106 is causing some uncertainty in the upcoming schedule.
November is a huge month for the UFC. With 18 scheduled fights and two live events, next month will be a chance for fans to get their eyes on a whole new group unheralded fighters. The lightweight and welterweight divisions will have the majority of those fights but the spotlight will be on the light heavyweight division and familiar names like Griffin/Ortiz and Couture/Vera.

LIGHTWEIGHT DIVISION (155 LBS.)
Rk   Fighter         Record    (Last 3)Prev
1    B.J. Penn        14-5-1    (2-1)    #1
2    Diego Sanchez 23-2      (3-0)    #2
3    Frank Edgar     10-1      (2-1)    #3
4    Kenny Florian   13-4      (2-1)    #4
5    Joe Stevenson 36-10     (2-1)    OTW

The hype is building for the only championship fight remaining on the 2009 schedule, B.J. Penn against Diego Sanchez at UFC 107 . Frank Edgar needs a decisive win against Kurt Pellegrino to remain the fighter in waiting. Kenny Florian also needs a big win in his rebound fight against Clay Guida to stay in title contention. Joe "Daddy" Stevenson jumps into the top five after his impressive win at UFC 104. Honorable Mention goes to Sean Sherk who missed his last fight due to injury and is in danger of being passed over for younger fighters. One To Watch is Gray "The Bully" Maynard who is reported to be fighting Nate Diaz early next year and could make a big jump in the rankings.

GSP is still the undisputed champ and is still waiting for a suitable contender. Jon Fitch was supposed to fight Ricardo Almeida at UFC 106 but Almeida dropped out due to injury. Fitch is now reported to fight Thiago Alves later this year in a rematch of top contenders. Alves was supposed to fight Paulo Thiago at UFC 107 but that fight has been scrapped in favor of the probable rematch with Fitch. Former champ Matt Hughes is in a holding pattern as all of the other top fighters prepare for other fights. Mike "Quick" Swick has a chance to continue moving up the rankings with a win against Dan Hardy at UFC 105. Honorable Mention goes to Hardy, who can also make a big leap in the rankings with a win over Swick. One To Watch is the recently reported, but not yet officially scheduled, fight between Josh Koscheck and Anthony "Rumble" Johnson.

1    Anderson Silva    25-4      (3-0)    #1
2    Vitor Belfort        18-8      (1-0)    OTW
3    Nate Marquardt   32-8-2   (3-0)    #2
4    Demian Maia      11-1      (2-1)    #4
5    Chael Sonnen     24-10-1 (2-1)    HM

Silva was reported to next defend his title against Vitor Belfort at UFC 108, but news of elbow surgery for the champ makes that fight doubtful. Belfort rockets up the charts to #2 after confirmation of a title fight with Silva at UFC 108. Unfortunately, said fight is in question due to Silva's injury and Belfort's struggle to cut weight to 185. Marquardt is now the man in waiting as he waits for Dan Henderson to sign, Silva/Belfort to fight, or one of the up and coming fighters to challenge him. Maia stays at #4 amidst rumors that he will fight Dan Miller in 2010. Chael Sonnen solidifies the #5 spot with his win over Yushin Okami at UFC 104. Honorable Mention goes to Micheal Bisping who is looking for a bounce-back on his native soil at UFC 105. One To Watch is Dan Henderson's contract. Dana White has made him a final offer and is basically playing chicken with Strikeforce, who is bidding for Hendo's services.

Recent Middleweight Results: UFC 104 (Oct 24)
Chael Sonnen defeats Yushin Okami by Unanimous Decision.
Jorge Rivera defeats Rob Kimmons by Technical Knock Out.

Upcoming Middleweight Fights:

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION (205 LBS.)
Rk    Fighter           Record  (Last 3)Prev

4    Thiago Silva       14-1    (2-1)    #5
5    Randy Couture   16-10   (1-2)    OTW

Machida finally showed he was touchable in his UFC 104 title fight, but he also managed to retain his belt with a somewhat controversial unanimous decision. Shogun Rua showed that he is back despite his loss Machida and stays at #2 because he may get an "immediate rematch" with the champ according to UFC President Dana White. Former champ Rashad Evans needs a bounce back fight soon or risk getting skipped over in the rankings once again. Thiago Silva moves up to #4 on the list as rumors of a fight with Evans at UFC 108 are heating up. Randy Couture leaps up to #5 as he drops down to light heavyweight for one last title run. Honorable Mention goes to former champ Forrest Griffin whose bounce back fight against Tito Ortiz is now headlining UFC 106. One To Watch is Ryan "Darth" Bader who showed determination and punching prowess in his victory at UFC 104.

Lyoto Machida defeats Mauricio Rua by Unanimous Decision.

Rk    Fighter               Record   (Last 3)Prev
1    Brock Lesnar            4-1     (3-0)    #1
2    Shane Carwin          11-0    (3-0)    #2
3    Antonio R. Nogueira 32-5-1 (2-1)    #3
4    Cain Velasquez         7-0    (3-0)    #5
5    Frank Mir                12-4    (2-1)    #4

The Lesnar/Carwin fight scheduled for UFC 106 has been officially postponed due to a lingering illness for the champ. Carwin remains at #2 until the fallout settles from his delayed championship fight. "Minotauro" Nogueira is still the man in waiting for the next title shot after the Carwin/Lesnar fight. Cain Valasquez moves up a notch after his dominating performance at UFC 104, but he still needs one more fight against a top contender before he gets a title shot. Frank Mir drops one spot but has an excellent chance to regain some momentum with a win at UFC 107. Honorable Mention still goes to Junior dos Santos who is reported to be fighting Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 108 in January. One To Watch is Stefan Struve, a 6'-11" fighter who is making progress with each fight and had an impressive Submission win at UFC 104.

Recent Heavyweight Results: UFC 104 (Oct 24)
Cain Velasquez defeats Ben Rothwell by Technical Knock Out.
