The Fourth Underworld Movie is Under Way

bynathanbloch   November 20, 2009 at 3:23PM  |  Views:  |  Comment

This goes out to all you Underworld fans out there -- still there? gotta be some of you somewhere -- and that's the news that the fourth film is, in fact, coming along nicely. Of course, the movie doesn't have a director or a star, but that's neither here nor there.

The Heat Vision blog reports that a writer from The Shield is penning the script:

Kate Beckinsale, who starred in the first two movies, has not cut a deal to return to the series; the third pic, a prequel, starred Rhona Mitra, who also has no deal. The fourth film does not have a director attached.

[The Shield writer John] Hlavin said the plot is under wraps, "but I can tell you it's not a prequel." He added, "It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don't want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to honor what fans have loved but at the same time introduce fresh elements."

Not a prequel, eh? This makes you wonder if Beckinsale has expressed any interest in the film whatsoever, or if they're just going to go ahead and cast someone else to play her part.

That, or they've got something different altogether up their sleeves.

But you have to wonder: after the last three films, are there still some fans out there demanding for a fourth? Or is this simply a way for Screen Gems and Lakeshore to squeeze a few more dollars out of the moderately successful franchise?

After all, we're now living in the age of Twilight. Someone should tell the Underworld people that vampires are most appealing when they're 1) teenagers, 2) in love, and 3) constantly staring into each other's eyes and professing said love for each other.

Just kidding.

Here's to a vampire franchise that gives us the superhuman, fist-fighting, weapon-wielding badasses we know them to really be.
