Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has taken the unusual step of bypassing established e-book retailers such as Amazon’s Kindle store and Apple’s iBookstore to release the Harry Potter e-book series herself. The books will be distributed through a new website created by Rowling called Pottermore. The books will be published in the “open-source e-Pub format, which is compatible with any electronic reading device, including the iPad.” Rowling has long resisted releasing the mega-series digitally. She announced the decision in a YouTube video, saying, “I wanted to give something back to the fans that have followed Harry so devotedly over the years, and to bring the stories to a new digital generation. I hope fans and those new to Harry will have as much fun helping to shape Pottermore as I have.” To entice fans to purchase the e-books Rowling has added 18,000 new words throughout the series. All seven books will be available online in October. [CNN]

Glee’s Star’s Reveals Drug Abuse Past

Cory Monteith, who plays Finn on the hit television musical Glee, says he’s lucky to be alive after battling drugs as a teen. The 29-year-old actor had a troubled upbringing in British Columbia, Canada and by age 13 “was skipping school to get drunk and smoke pot.” By age 16 he says he was “out of control” and had attended 12 different schools. Monteith says at one point his drug use was so bad it was a case of “anything and everything, as much as possible’ and admits he “had a serious problem.” His mother checked him into rehab at age 19, but it didn’t work. Monteith says, “I did the stint but then went back to doing exactly what I left off doing.” The actor says his life changed after a “crystallizing event.” He tells Parade magazine, “I stole a significant amount of money from a family member. I knew I was going to get caught, but I was so desperate I didn’t care. It was a cry for help. I was confronted and I said, ‘Yeah, it was me.’ It was the first honorable, truthful thing that had come out of my mouth in years.” Monteith then got clean, took some acting lessons, and the rest is history. Missy Elliot Reveals She’s Suffering from Graves' Disease

Missy Elliott has finally revealed to the public that she has been suffering from Graves' disease, an autoimmune illness that affects the thyroid, since 2008. Elliott recently broke the sad news to People. "I was [driving and] trying to put my foot on the brake, but my leg was jumping. I couldn't keep the brake down and almost crashed," Elliott told the magazine. "I couldn't write because my nervous system was so bad -- I couldn't even use a pen." Apparently the extremely talented producer/performer has been improving her condition though. "I'm 30 pounds lighter because I've been exercising." Elliott continued. "My thyroid is functioning, so I haven't had to take medication in about nine months. [But] you live with it for the rest of your life." We wish Missy the best of luck dealing with this trying situation. [ThisIs50]
