Sean Bean Takes on Luke Goss in Death Race Prequel

bynathanbloch   March 01, 2010 at 8:35PM  |  Views:  |  Comment

For everyone who couldn't get enough of Death Race in 2008, this is a day full of good news. The movie is getting a prequel to be directed by Roel Reine and produced by Paul W.S. Anderson, who directed the first. Sean Bean and Luke Goss will play the leads.

The Hollywood Reporter gives us a few more details about this project:

Also in the cast are Lauren Cohan, Ving Rhames, Danny Trejo, and Frederick Koehler. ...The prequel is serving as the origin story for the character named Frankenstein, a convicted cop killer (Goss) in a declining American Empire where a racing reality show is about to be born in the country’s corrupt prison system.

Will this movie work without Jason Statham? Is there a big enough fan base to support a prequel? Who the hell is Roel Reine?

According to IMDb, Roel Reine has directed many straight-to-DVD worthy movies, such as Adrenaline, Pistol Whipped, Deadwater, and The Lost Tribe. Seems like he's perfect for this project.

So what is someone of the caliber of Sean Bean doing in this film? They must have offered him a very large paycheck. That, or he was afraid he'd never get cast in anything again after playing Zeus in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

What are your thoughts? Is this a prequel anyone is interested in? Is it a good thing or a bad thing that Anderson isn't directing?
