According to reports, the CBS-operated What's Trending account featured a report earlier today claiming that the founder of Apple had passed away. It stated: "Reports say that Steve Jobs has passed away. Stay tuned for more updates." Following the false post, What's Trending rushed out a Tweet saying they were sorry for the bonehead mix up. "Apologies- reports of Steve Job's death completely unconfirmed. Live on." Steve Jobs stepped down as CEO of Apple almost three weeks ago. Some are saying this false report made its way due to Apple’s lackluster performance today on the stock market. [TMZ]

Miley Cyrus Swears She’s Not a “Crazy Lady”

Despite having an album titled Good Girl Gone Bad, Miley Cyrus swears she’s not a bad girl. Cyrus, who’s been keeping a low profile of late, feels she is misunderstood. The former Disney Channel star opened up to Prestige magazine, saying, “People have very mixed opinions on me.” She says she doesn’t understand why some people see her as a role model and other view her as “completely inappropriate.” The 18-year-old sets the record straight, telling the mag, “I'm not some crazy lady who's gone off the deep end, because I definitely haven't. Every 18-year-old explores sexuality and experiments and tries things. For me there's no reason to change that.” Cyrus says she actually lives a fairly boring life. She says she stays in “pretty much every day” and has had the same boyfriend, actor Liam Hemsworth, for two years. Well, that settles that. [Prestige]

Google Uses a Lot of Energy

Google has finally fessed up to how much energy it uses across the world to power its various operations such as search, Gmail, and YouTube. The tech giant says it used 2.26 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2010. That’s enough electricity to continuously power 200,000 homes. That might seem like a huge number, but all in all it’s less than one percent of the world’s electricity generation. Google says an average search uses 0.3 watt-hours of electricity, which is the equivalent of turning on a 60W light bulb for 17 seconds. Urs Hoelzle, Google’s senior vice president for technical infrastructure, says lowering energy use has been a prime focus of the company. He says, “For the last decade, energy use has been an obsession. We’ve designed and built some of the most efficient servers and data centers in the world-using half the electricity of a typical data center.” Google says it emitted 1.46 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2010, but this was cancelled out through the use of renewable energy and the purchases of carbon offsets. Google has been carbon neutral since 2007. [New York Times]

Austin Powers Actor Gets Life in Prison

Joseph Hyungmin Son, the guy who famously played Doctor Evil's henchman Random Task in Austin Powers, has been sentenced to life in prison following a conviction for a gang rape and torture on Christmas Eve in 1990. Son was found guilty of the offense, which carries a life sentence without the possibility of parole, on August 25. According to prosecutors, the woman was apparently checking out some Christmas lights with some friends when Son and another man dragged her to their car and repeatedly raped and sodomized her. Thankfully, after the case had been considered pretty much dead, Son was eventually linked to the horrific crime by a DNA sample. [E Online]
