Jonathan Levine, the director who made All the Boys Love Mandy Lane and The Wackness finally has a new film lined up. This one's going to star Seth Rogen and Anna Kendrick, the young lass we last saw in Up in the Air. This has potential to be a big small film.
First Showing describes the premise:
The screenplay, which is apparently still untitled (though it was originally called I'm With Cancer), is about a 25-year-old who learns that he has cancer. It's based on the real experiences of screenwriter/producer Will Reiser, who was diagnosed with cancer and successfully battled the disease over several years. Kendrick will play Katherine, a young psychologist assigned to handle Adam's case despite her lack of experience...
Rogen and Evan Goldberg will be producing the movie. It's true that Kendrick's role sounds extremely similar to the role she just had in Up in the Air, but we'll have to wait to see a trailer before we judge it too harshly.
And then there's the question: how much potential does cancer have to be funny? This could wind up being about as funny as Funny People, and we all know how that turned out. Of course, it helps that Adam Sandler doesn't star in this.
More than anything, it's just nice to see Levine directing again. He had a project lined up over at Fox Atomic, but then the subdivision of Fox got the axe and that was that. Here's hoping this movie actually makes it to production.
What are your thoughts? Does this sound like just another romantic comedy or do you think it has some potential to rise above the mediocre movies we're used to in this genre?
