Meet the New Miss USA

April 20, 2009

The United States of America has a new beauty queen. Last night in Las Vegas, Miss North Carolina title winner Kristen Dalton was crowned Miss USA 2009. Check out a whole bunch of pictures after the jump!

Kristen comes from a family of beauty queens. Her mother was crowned Miss North Carolina in 1982 and her younger sister was Miss North Carolina Teen USA in 2008. The 22-year-old is a talented singer and dancer who studied Spanish and psychology at East Carolina University.

However, Kristen's win has been overshadowed by the first runner-up’s controversial interview response. Miss California USA Carrie Prejean was asked by celebrity blogger Perez Hilton her views on gay marriage. Hilton asked the beauty queen, "Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same-sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit? Why or why not?"

Prejean stumbled with her response:

We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite. And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised.

Perez later blogged that Miss California was a “dumb bitch” who “doesn't inspire” and “doesn't unite.” Perez then drew funny squiggles on a picture of her. That’s payback.
