Allistair Overeem makes his highly anticipated return to Strikeforce to defend his Heavyweight championship against top Strikeforce Heavyweight contender Brett Rogers. There is much speculation as to why Fedor Emelianenko or Fabricio Werdum were not awarded their shot at Strikeforce Heavyweight Champ Overeem - but it is assumed that Fedor and Fabricio will face off before July on a CBS broadcast. The odds surely will have Overeem a large favorite in this fight. Overeem is criticized for dodging the big fights in the States - and I'm sure this bout will draw a huge amount of chatter throughout the MMA community in March and April.
Andrei Arlovski is putting his professional boxing career on pause to come back to mixed martial arts and face Antonio Silva. The Pitbull Arlovski hasn't stepped into the cage since the brutal TKO he suffered at the hands of Brett Rogers back in June of 2009. Prior to that bout, Arlovski was knocked out by Emelianenko in January of 2009. Both of those fights were first round knockouts. Antonio Silva is also hoping to jump back into the win column and score his first victory with Strikeforce. Silva lost in his Strikeforce debut to Fabricio Werdum back on the November 7th Strikeforce Card which was broadcast on CBS. This will be an interesting match-up as both of these men enjoy to stand and exchange punches, elbows, knees and kicks. This should be a high energy fight - that will un-undoubtedly end with one of the fighters waking up, and wondering what just happened?
ScottTrade Center is the home to the cities NHL hockey team, the St. Louis Blues. The maximum seating capacity is 19,150. Which is noteworthy because that gives Strikeforce: St. Louis the opportunity to break the MMA organization's attendance record. Strikeforce's current attendance record, 18,265, took pace way back in 2006 with Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Gracie held at the HP Pavilion in Sacramento, CA (the organization's first event and the first professional MMA event held in the state of California.
First Strikeforce Miami, then there is the upcoming Strikeforce Nashville, and May's Strikeforce St. Louis - plus a potential match-up between Fedor and Werdum in June or July...looks like Strikeforce is giving the UFC a serious run for their money in terms of best 2010 MMA cards.
What do you think - is Strikeforce emerging as the premier MMA organization in 2010?
